RugbyHeaven reports that the Brumbies have given up completely on retaining the services of homegrown superstar Matt Giteau beyond the upcoming season:
Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan said Giteau had made it known before the end of last year’s Super 14 that he was likely to head overseas after the World Cup this year.
Knowing the dynamic inside-back’s desire and the huge interest from at least four French clubs, Fagan said there were no strong attempts to keep him in Australia.
Instead the Brumbies shored up their 10-12 stocks by keeping Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano, both targeted by the Melbourne Rebels, and recruiting Queanbeyan young gun Robbie Coleman.
”For me it’s a non-issue but as much as we’d love him to stay in Australia, we’ve known that it was more than likely to happen,” he said. ”None of this comes as a surprise and that’s why we’ve recruited the way we have. I think [Giteau signing] will happen sooner rather than later and that’s a good thing from our perspective.”
I hope wherever he goes he’s happier than he’s appeared to be for the last couple of years.
