Budget goodies for Canberra in the budget.

johnboy 14 May 2013 25

Taking a browse through Budget Paper 2 we find:

For the Hospital:

The Government will contribute $5.0 million to the Australian Capital Territory in 2014-15 towards the development of a dedicated service for children within the Emergency Department of the Canberra Hospital. This will help streamline and better coordinate paediatric emergency and inpatient services for around 15,000 children per year.

The ACT Government will contribute the remaining establishment costs and fund the recurrent resourcing requirements for this initiative.

Chump change for a footpath up to Parliament House:

The Government will provide $0.1 million in 2012-13 to the ACT Government, as a contribution toward the cost of constructing the Parliament House Walk between the Civic Centre and Parliament House in Canberra.

The cost of this measure will be met by redirecting funding from the Parliament House Walk — feasibility study measure announced in the 2012-13 Budget.

And that’s it.

The price of safe Labor seats. Enjoy your public service savings!

Anything take your notice dear reader?

Why is Canberra a safe Labour seat?
Wouldn’t it be better if we were a swing seat and as a result rewarded with pork barrelling.

It would be much better to be marginal, but too many public servants will blindly vote labor every election

They might do, but at the same time, Canberra isn’t conservative on many social matters and thats the biggest issue. Financially many of the coalition policies suit Canberrans better, but he conservative social policies of the coalition don’t.

And lets face it, how many people blindly voted liberal because they were handing out tax cuts?

Anything you can accuse one side of politics of is rarely confined to just that side of Politics.

On a side note, watching the budget I noticed our treasurer didn’t sound like he believed in himself much. A very dull flat, almost sulky tone.
Maybe he knows this budget might be his last….

+1 – it was like a half hour condolence motion – even with the sound down (a very tempting option) the looks on the faces behind him would have given the same impression. In the post-speech interview, Leigh Sales treated him with the same contempt as Oakes the other day – all rather sad.

He is an absolute muppet. He deserves to be treated with contempt

Reasonably plucky in his Press Club appearance this afternoon, but I don’t think the audience is buying it – too much baggage. Riley had fun.

Paid parking in the Triangle, about time… the rest of Canberra has had paid parking for ages.

Yeah…….oh except for those fat cats working in Fyshwick. It’s about time all those shop owners, sales people, mechanics, warehouse workers, prostitutes and car salesmen started paying for parking as well……..

ANU is celebrating funding for a tax studies institute.

Huzzah! – they might like to commission someone in New York to compose a suitable musical tribute to celebrate this joyous event.
