To date the Liberals have not managed to get any response to yesterday’s budget online.

But as responses come in we’ll post them here.

1) First off the rank is the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. They’re thrilled:

The Canberra Symphony Orchestra efforts to bring classical music to ACT school children through the highly successful Noteworthy program have been boosted thanks to funding confirmed today by the ACT Government.

The 2011-2012 Budget includes funding of $201,000 over three years for Noteworthy, matching the generous support that’s been provided by the Macquarie Group Foundation since the program’s inception in 2007.

Canberra Symphony Orchestra CEO Henry Laska said the organisation welcomed the funding to secure the future of Noteworthy, allowing the organisation to expand and develop the popular educational program.

2) The Greens have emailed in an omnibus dump of their thoughts. The headlines read:

    1. Glimmers of a green shift in the Budget
    2. Mental Health funding increase
    3. Greens win funds to help insulate households against electricity price rises
    4. Small steps on transport planning; more needed
    5. Kippax gets Blue Ribbon bus service
    6. Government takes wrong turn on Majura Parkway
    7. Building quality and energy efficiency
    8. Funding for better planning
    9. Government takes wrong approach to Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Problem
    10. Disability Education
    11. Small biodiversity wins won’t solve the larger problem
    12. Welcome boost to housing for vulnerable people
    13. Urban Trees renewal re-funded
    14. New Street Law staff will need a desk
    15. Finally, street level recycling for Civic
    16. Organic waste inaction to put pressure on landfill
    17. Cuts to community sector looming
    18. Greens question Government’s funding strategy for birthing services
    19. Young people transitioning out of care funding boost welcomed
    20. Greens Swimmingly Successful
    21. Greens Light the way on Active Transport
    22. Community sport emphasis welcome

The Greens have also released a table on “Key ACT Greens Items”.

The autism/ASD community does not seemed thrilled with the Budget … see http://the-riotact.com/act-budget-disappointing-for-autism/46753

I’m sure that is partly the case but look at the local results in the federal election. Labor rules this town without having to even try.

Hmmm. Last time I looked, we had one Labor and one Liberal Senator … and minority Government in our Assembly.

Our current government continues to fail abysmally at what should be its core function and yet still people continue to elect them because of some loyalty to the party.

I would suggest that people vote Labor mainly because of the lack of a legitimate alternative rather than out of loyalty to the ALP

So you would never vote Liberal but we should have an effective opposition because they should be held accountable?
To whom exactly?
.

I thought it would be reasonably obvious – swinging voters

Ah, the magical “Swinging Voter”.

In other words “can’t somebody else do it”

What’s your point?

My point is that the vast majority of the tasks our government should be performing have nothing to do with ideology and the difference between Labor and Liberal on a local level is effectively (or at least should be) insignificant.

Our current government continues to fail abysmally at what should be its core function and yet still people continue to elect them because of some loyalty to the party.

I personally do not want to see a Liberal Government why the hell would I vote for one???

I am talking about the need for an effective opposition, for an opposition to be effective does not mean that I should have to put aside my personal beliefs and principles and vote for something I don’t support – it means that they should do their job.

If you don’t vote for change you won’t get it.

Unfortunately, that’s true. And in the ACT, those who have been voting for change are still at the mercy of those who refuse to, not because they are in agreement with the current government, but because of blind party allegiance.

The ALP will be in power in Canberra forever due to the Green vote.

There is no way in hell the Greens would ever back the tories.

Exactly. A vote for the Greens is a vote for Labor.

Unfortunate, but true. I wonder how many people realised this last local election? I’m betting not many.

Democracy is a bugger isn’t it?

I won’t lie and suggest that I would vote Liberal in a pink fit, however, I genuinely believe an ineffective opposition is bad for the people. Governments need to be held to account and, as it stands, there is no-one to hold ACT Labor to account.

People like yourself who they know will never vote against them anyway?

Although I don’t think the current local Liberal party are all that good, the problem we have in this town is that there is an extremely large proportion of the population that would never think of voting anything other than Labor.
Until that changes we’ll be stuck with the likes of Stanhope who laugh at the proposition of ever being held accountable to the people he’s actually meant to serve.

This is why they are an absolutely ineffective opposition. If they were serious about gaining government, rather than waiting it to fall into their laps, they would have pulled an all-nighter and been pumping out the pressers throughout the day. Lazy and ineffective.

I can’t say I am surprised that we haven’t seen anything from Seselja, but I am surprised that Alistair Coe hasn’t put out anything yet.

That’s a good point, and I have to agree. I dislike the current government an awful lot and I think they are running this town into the ground, but the opposition needs to get their acts together if they are ever going to be considered an actual alternative.

Can someone explain number 16 to me ? Are we running out of places to put our organic waste or landfill sites ?
