Built in wardrobe pricing in Canberra?

We recently got 4 quotes from various Canberra companies (varying from stegbar to husband/wife combo) and the cheapest quote came in at $2400 installed. This is for a 3m 3 door (mirror sliding) with nothing fancy inside just hanging/4 drawers and some shelves.

In Sydney the same wardrobe can be installed for $800 – $1150. Why is Canberra so much more expensive?

Has anyone got any suggestions for a good local company who is not so expensive? I am leaning towards getting the internals from Cabinets on demand and the doors from Sydney.

Thanks.

$2400 is definitely a piss take! We recently moves into a new apartment in Queanbeyan and searched for a good built in wardrobe price. If your still looking, Canberra Wardrobes did ours for easily the best price and they were very friendly all the way through as well. Hope this helps! Their website is this btw – https://canberrawardrobes.com

My wife and I used the guys from PAC Joinery in hume for 2 wardrobes (main and babies room). Peter was great to deal with. All we had done was the inside bits of the wardorbes as we had ordered the doors from regency wardrobes for the main already before we found pete at PAC. We will be using him for the doors in the babies room now as he has great prices and is really efficient with booking and getting the job done. Booked in the next day on one job and on the day that suited me for the other room.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I used cabinets on demand just for inserts last year – super easy to put in (although getting the old chipboard bits out was a bit of a challenge). They did deliver the wrong sized rods, so I was without anywhere to hang my clothes for a week or so until I went out to Mitchell to pick them up. They wouldn’t come out to drop them off (I’m in the inner north) and the guy was a bit of a jerk about it. But they were cheap and work well.

We got ours done last year by Creative by Design which was good, but it cost a bomb. We found out soon after that alot of kitchen cabinet makers also are available for wardrobes. I’d suggest getting some quotes from them.

But really I just logged in to say AVOID STEGBAR. They’ve reliably bollocksed up a variety of things we’ve had done over the years and honestly just keep looking anywhere else.

Ditto. And never buy their wooden windows, if you expect them to not leak badly.

As for wardrobes, check out what Ikea can do. Worth the trip.

Bunnings have some great DIY Options

Ikea not idea.

Lol stegbar

carpentry is expensive. Unless you have some fancy carpentry in, 2400 for a 3 metre wardrobe is taking the piss.

I think I paid 700 dollars for aluminium and components to do 6 wardrobes. 70 dollars a sheet of mirror for bedroom doors. 600 dollars for laminated white glass in the rest of the doors.

If you’ve installed your own kitchen then a wardrobe should be simple. Definitely do the interior yourself & at worst get them to install the doors. Order it all from Sydney & maybe get a chippie to install.

Stegbar can be dodgy but usually they are much cheaper.

Idea has some great wardrobes where you can choose your internal layout and then doors you like. It could be well worth the drive to Sydney and getting your Allen keys ready.

The reason for the cost is simple. This is Canberra and people will pay it so it costs that much.

As for cabinets on demand had them make up inserts for my wardrobe early last year. Not hard to put together, just give the design careful thought and measure properly and you cannot go too far wrong. Certainly cheaper than the inserts you can buy at Bunnings etc and being custom perfect fit so long as measured right.

Thanks for that, my hubby and I designed and installed our own kitchen last year so have a good understanding of this kind of thing. We didn’t use cabinets on demand though. Do you have any cabinets that are 450mm wide? I was wondering what the internal width was – like what is the actual shelf width inside one of the 450 cabs? They use 16mm white laminated sides right?

We used Creative by Design in Hume and they did good. But this was a decade ago and I think they’ve been through a few owners/locations since so may not be useful.
