John Hargreaves has announced that he’s re-modeling the recently re-modeled Bunda Street.

$4 million worth and not a promise but tenders awarded.

“Investment into the upgrade of Bunda Street will total $4 million which will include the replacement of paving, sustainable water harvesting for street trees, safe crossing points, new street furniture and lighting.

The upgrade will provide a transition between the extended Canberra Centre and the pedestrian areas of Garema Place and City Walk.

Consultation for the project will be undertaken in October 2008.

Well I’m all for resurfacing Bunda St – it’s a friggin’ goat track at the the moment aound the top end.

definitely, although it might be best to wait until the building on the old cinema site is complete so that the truck traffic doesn’t wreck the new road surface.

I wonder if Bunda Street shouldn’t be made one way, at least part of the way then put angle parking in., fit more cars, widen the footpaths, add a bike lane etc.

definitely a good idea.

Next thing you know, they’ll be knocking down the Sydney & Melbourne Buildings because “they are just SO old”.

harvyk1: yeap, you’ll find me at the noodle house on anketell street at least once a fortnight. Having quality laksa that much closer to home is doing nothing good for my waistline.

Anketell street is a great improvement in amenities for Tuggeranong, but apart from a 200m strip it is still dead. Good eateries and bars, but 50m away is like a de-militarized zone. Small steps I guess.

I hope that whomever thought putting a college and fast food craphouses on prime “water”front was a good idea got shown the door a long time ago.

I agree with bd84 re: making Bunda street pedestrian only. There’s a lot of places where this could work (shared use zone and/or 10km/h limit on Anketell?).

Bunda street should just be shut off to general traffic, there is very little point in driving down it or the side streets during the day, unless you like waiting 10 minutes for pedestrians at each zebra crossing. They should make it a mall with access for delivery vehicles for the canberra centre etc. put some decent paving and some pretty green bits and seating and it will all be good. It will let the restaurants on the ground floor there extend their outdoor areas too.

We’re half-way through October – what’s the consultation process Hargreaves?

It’s certainly busy in Tuggeranong at lunch time… it’s so much better on Anketell Street than it used to be… a thumbs up for that redevelopment.

yea tuggeranong has improved alot, althought whenever i wak or drive pass (which is at all different times of day and night) it is never busy..??

Work on getting people to congregate closer to where they live and work, rather than driving upwards of 20km into Civic and then struggling to park. Create viable cafe areas outside of Civic/Kingston/Manuka. Put more than colleges alongside the “other” lakes.

Have you been to Tuggeranong of late? They (or at least someone) has really upgraded Anketell st, along the front. I don’t know if you remember, but it used to be almost a wasteland with a bus stop, now it’s got cafes, restaurants, and it a half worthwhile place to be.

Just Hargeaves bleating on about nothing, as usual. Wasn’t he the one who signed off on the GDE? What would he know about roads?

I agree. There’s a massive redevelopment going on at Cooleman Court at the moment. It’ll be interesting to see it when it’s finished.

I think that instead of performing endless upgrades in Civic (even though some of them may be warranted) we should be upgrading the other city centres. Provide improved community areas in Woden Plaza (I won’t give in to Centro), Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Gungahlin, Cooleman Court.

I’d like to see that section next to Gus’s, opposite Sammy’s upgraded. You know where emos and other dropkicks sit on milk crates.

There was a rumour that the owners of the Canberra Centre had bought the buildings opposite the ‘North Qtr’. I wonder if this is related?

City walk does need a lot of work to spruce it up but it will always suffer so close to the Canberra Centre.

More parking would be nice 😉

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!

Why can’t you leave Civic alone for more than 3 seconds!!!
