The ESA has produced the following advice:

The ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) is currently conducting a hazard reduction burn on Black Mountain.

The location of the burn can be found at K11 on the ACT Handy Map (click here) or in the Canberra and region Yellow Pages phone directory.

Smoke can be seen and smelt across parts of the ACT as a result of the burn.

Residents are advised not to be alarmed by the smoke.

For more information about hazard reduction burns in the ACT go to the TAMS website (click here)

UPDATED: TAMS are now advising that the burning is still going on.

Isn’t the bushes of Black Mountain a habitat for roos?

Wonder if there was an exodus of roos from the fire and smoke?

there aren’t too many roos there (most of the ‘roos’ you notice there will be swamp wallabies) – the eastern greys tend to like grass and will hang around places like at the bottom of Aranda Bushland – grassland with access to trees and scrub.

That’s awesome! The best I could do was a shot from the airport showing the smoke haze superimposed on the sunset.

It was an awesome sight at 530pm (as stated previously). I wish I had my camera. The only day I don’t take it to work. The view from the western side of black mountain was pretty good too with the embers/flames still visible.

’twas an impressive sight to see at 17:30ish today. I did notice a few people pulled over, cameras in hand. Even noticed a tripod. I’m interested to see some of the pics, should they make it to the internets

Just a damn shame *someone* had to rubberneck whilst traveling southbound on Gungahlin Dr and cause an accident…

NSW Rural Fire Service is also conducting a burn off in the Tindery National Park tomorrow.

Passed it on my way into work. Damn, didn’t have my camera with me, it would have made a fine image for RA!!
