A controlled burn

Prescribed burns will take place at Mount Wanniassa and near Hall Cemetery today and at Canberra Nature Park, Red Hill, tomorrow, weather permitting, according to ACT Parks and Conservation Service.

The 32-hectare Mount Wanniassa prescribed burn will take place in the Wanniassa Hills Nature Reserve near Erindale Drive, Fadden.

The two-hectare Hall ecological burn near the cemetery and Wallaroo Road is designed to promote growth of native flora while also suppressing weed species and helping to increase biodiversity, according to a spokesman for Parks and Conservation.

Tomorrow, a 19-hectare prescribed burn will take place near the Canberra Nature Park in Red Hill, west of Gowrie Drive, Deakin, weather permitting.

Yesterday’s prescribed burn at Kambah is now in the patrol phase and crews will continue to monitor for any signs of smoke or flames.

And if we, the general public, were to burn off the grass clippings in our backyards or have smoke come out of our home fireplaces, the EPA could potentially fine us for polluting the air. Double standards much?

Hardly. They care not about any such thing. I had a directly behind me neighbour burning fence pailings while doing a knock down demo which was so bad that our own inside fire alarms went off. I had a toddler and I was pregnant at the time. The toxic fumes from the burning toxic pailings was acrid despite closed doors and windows. Rang Canberra Connect, they promptly sent someone over (which was good) but then he came over and told us “he was roasting a spit” and it was totally legal. hmmmm tasty.

As for the fadden burn off, I do know they closed part of the playground at the school and anyone with asthma was told to go play inside. It was pretty strong, but a necessary evil. I would rather that than 2003.

The burn at Mt Wanniassa began today (Wednesday) and it is still proceeding, well into the night.
The smouldering logs will reek for days and nights.
Fadden looks and smells like Beijing at the moment.
As usual, no direct notification to residents.
TAMS are treating Tuggeranong people with contempt.

You guys are spot on.

What we need is to stop all burning off and let the fuel loads build up.

Then we could have another 18/1/2003 event, wouldn’t that be good? That’d definitely give some people something else to whinge about.

What’s this got to do with Tuggeranong residents, as in how are they being treated any differently to anyone else? These burns are advertised.
It’s impractical to conduct direct notification. It’s impossible to schedule these burns far in advance due to the possibility of having to alter burn dates because of weather conditions

Only Tuggeranong suffered unduly from these necessary burn-offs. I don’t think you have any idea how uncomfortable is was for some people.
The geography and weather conditions play a big part in dispersion of pollution in the valley and as the source of the smoke was from the highest point (Mt Wanniassa) the smoke covered a large are on its journey Southward in the calm conditions.
These meteorological issues are well known to all the directorates that were involved and the day they chose could not have been any worse.
And while it was meant to be “one day” it continued for two days.
Why is it impractical to give “direct notification”? We get this at least once a month from politicians about other things which are far less significant.

There has been some smoke around and I do have to stay indoors due to breathing problems. An elderly neighbour rang me to find out what the smoke was all about …. she thought maybe another bush fire.
