The ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Dominic Lane has announced that the official 2012/2013 bushfire season for the ACT will conclude tonight at 11.59pm [31 March 2013].

“Since the bushfire season commenced on 1 October, 2012, a total of five Total Fire Ban days were declared in the ACT”, Commissioner Lane said.

“This compares to no Total Fire Bans the previous bushfire season of 2011/2012,” he said.

“During this bushfire season, the ACT recorded a total of 223 bush and grass fires, with only 104 recorded during the previous season.

“We saw some dangerous fire conditions through the ACT during the season and I would like to thank the ACT Community for their co-operation and support during these times.

“Unless conditions direct otherwise, the bushfire season will recommence on October 1, 2013?.

Being a member of the RFS now, i highly encourage people to come and join. Not only does it introduce you to a wide range of people, you also learn alot of skills that are useful in life aswell as in the fire service. It is alot of fun.

Every Rural Fire Service in Australia is always inundated with offers of volunteers and assistance in December and January.

Come 1 April, bushfire season is ended… and we lose that good will.

The Riot Act might be only a small place to start – but Johnboy, perhaps now is the time for a public campaign/recruitment drive to try and get helpers in before next summer.

If mainstream media won’t seek comments from the RFS that say “so anyone who was touched by the bushfires and wished they could help – now’s the time to give us a call”, perhaps the Riot Act can take a leadership role here.

My personal health and fitness doesn’t able me to help out – but I hope one day that my back gets right and my gut gets smaller so that I wouldn’t be a liability.

Trying to prevent, and preparing for, bushfires, is a year-round activity. .

Which is why the fire service spends the off season doing training, equipment maintenance, and hazard reduction.

Are they really saying that if some idiot went out into the bush today with intent, there couldn’t possibly be a bushfire?

Yep, basically. Without hot, dry, and windy conditions, it is pretty much impossible to get a wildfire going. Hot, dry and windy certainly aren’t words I would used to describe Canberra’s weather from now until October.

Our taxes at work

You should try it sometime – work that is.

That’s a relief.

I’ve heard of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. But it seems that the bureaucrats have added an additional season.
