Busway on display -- the reality

Yesterday afternoon I took myself and my brand new fancy-pants camera to see the display of plans for the time travelling busway.

I couldn’t exactly remember where it was, but knew it was somewhere in that community building near the library. By the time I’d been to the Belconnen Community Service Inc offices and the Belconnen Youth Centre, both in which where I got told it was “just around the corner”, I was starting to feel a bit like leopards might be involved after all. But then I found the Belconnen Community Centre (never knew there were so many things in that one building) and the display.

Busway display

Once there I did not see an leopards, nor warning signs thereof (although I did spot Vicki Dunne in a corner). In fact the signage telling people where to find the display was actually pretty good if you approached from the correct side of the building, unlike me.

Busway signs

There were about 20 people looking at two walls set up with plans and posters explaining why the busway really is a good idea after all. There were all kinds of facts and figures about the busway, including the steps involved in choosing the routes and the objectives of the project. One of the features of the display I particularly liked was a television giving a virtual tour of the busway, along each of the two proposed routes.

I was introduced twice to John, who wore an ACTPLA name badge and appeared to be in charge. There was also a woman wearing an ACTPLA badge as well as several people with makeshift paper badges who seemed to be explaining the plans and the different routes and the why to interested public.

I was piled up with factsheets, plans and newsletters all saying pretty much the same things about the busway. You can see the plans and what the newsletters and things say on the ACTPLA website. I was also encouraged several times to fill in a feedback sheet with my opinions about the plans and which of the proposed routes I thought was best. According to one of the signs, the “community consultation is ongoing including today’s Oublic Display” and it will also involve meetings with relevant groups and individuals. They also invite written submissions from pretty much anyone with an opinion on the matter.

Natch. It was far more amusing as an oublic display.

Apologies for stupid typing Chalker. I blame the keyboard — it’s not my usual one and I swear them keys keep movin’ on me!

Kerces, you said a sign indicated it was an “Oublic display”. Is this an indication that ACTPLA was intending on this display being in an oubliette as we had origninally supposed?

has anybody seen the plans for the new upgraded interchange yet ?

I may have chucked it out, but if I still have them I’ll scan it when I get home.

Apparently I must be in the suburb of 10 houses that gets the community consultation…

Considering I live practically in NSW (but not on the Queanbeyan side of Canberra), they must consider me to be living in a ‘safe’ enough area to ask me my thoughts 🙂

The leopard is probably hunting baggy pant wearing teenagers at the interchange over the road, if it knew what was good for it…
*shaking fist at leopard*

I bet its in a box somewhere

If Thumper gets a Leopard, I want one too.

Thumper did you actually read the article or just look at the pretty pictures?

Thought I addressed the leopard thing thoroughly.

interesting display, but similar to the others.

two seperate actpla peopel admitted that the busway was not going to be built as it wasnt funded, they said the purpose of the display is to show peopel where ‘future’ busways will go.
