Cafe Loui schnitzel roll. $10 lunch review

Looi snitzel roll

The Loui cafe in the bus interchange, under the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, is famous for making one of the best cups of coffee in town, and the explosive displeasure it’s owner displays to those brave (or foolish) enough to try and sit without ordering.

But they also do a line of food and today I tried their schnitzel roll.

It costs $7 and comes with mozzarella cheese and a sweet tomato pesto-like mix.

Cafe Loui is a bright, clean space and the staff were fast in taking my order.

They performed a bit of an odd ritual with it. First the roll was microwaved, and then it was put in a big jaffle iron.

The result was crunchy, unburnt, with the cheese nicely melted. But it did make the bread a touch chewy.

For the suits of Infrastructure afraid to risk the sneers of the bus interchange emos it’s probably hard to walk past.

I wasn’t a huge fan of this roll mostly due to the sweetness, and with the small size there are better deals out there.

But they have got fair selection of things with genuinely upmarket ingredients for the curious.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

alrighty. this comment’s more of a reccomendation for another place than any comment on Loui’s. I tried to find a way to contact you personally but can’t seem to find anything on the site.

Yep, food is always pretty decent here, but portion size and price can leave a bit to be desired if you’re looking for a big feed.

Yes gourmet ingredients, but overpriced and slow service. Ciabalia around the corner (past Kaldi, past Tonic) has reasonable lunches and survives on it’s good reputation for service and food.

It’s a strange but very wise thing putting the roll in the microwave first.
Those places that don’t and put it straight on the press either burn the outside to a crisp to heat the thing through or avoid that but leave the middle at a very dangerous temperature for bacteria.
Microwave to heat then the press to add some crunch, very smart.

It may be that microwaving the roll is common practice at Loui’s; but I microwave my bread at home when it is stale (as it brings out the moisture).

We used to have breakfast at Loui’s once a week, and even though the food is pretty good, they are way over priced for what you get.
