Call for SES volunteers

By johnboy 8 February 2011 2

Simon Corbell is banging the drum for more SES volunteers.

“The ACTSES is seeking another six volunteers for its Pialligo Unit based at Fairbairn,” Mr Corbell said.

“We have seen a great demand for our SES volunteers this summer, and they provide a crucial service to the community in times of need,” Mr Corbell said.

“The Pialligo unit is responsible for providing support to the Incident Management Team during emergency operations and for establishing and maintaining radio communications with teams in the field.”

There are a number of other functions that members from this Unit may also become involved with including admin support, catering, driving duties, staging area management and support to other agencies.

The ACT State Emergency Service is a volunteer based organisation within the ACT Emergency Services Agency with legislative responsibility for emergency preparedness and response to storm and floods in the ACT.

“The ACTSES current has 228 volunteer members and has responded to more than 2600 calls for help from the public this financial year,” Mr Corbell said.

One has to wonder why six vacancies popped up all at once.

In my opinion what we need is more operational members, not support staff.

If you think that this is something you could do, then I urge you to take the step and join. However, if you think support is your field then please consider it.

It can be an incredibly rewarding endeavour if you’re willing to put in the effort. Yes, you will be cold, wet, tired, sore, hot, sweaty, aching, bored, annoyed, but you will also be part of a tight, trained team that prides itself on working in any conditions at any time in an extremely trying and often dangerous environment.

Indeed the ACTSES is held in great esteem in other states for its professionalism and ability.

It will take up some of your time, but the rewards are great.

Think about it.

I doubt the vacancies “popped up” at once – more likely an review of the current operational demand identified that an additional six volunteers would be useful for Pialligo unit – that would allow an additional shift of incident management, or two-three field communications teams, or further support across existing team deployments.
