Calling for the Cavalry

The Whacking Day blog has a take on a home game by Canberra’s Australian Baseball league entry, the Canberra Cavalry.

I have to say that the new league and local organisers did a superb job at putting on a slicky organised and entertaining event for what is a minnow sport in this country. The new (taxpayer-subsidised) renovated ball park looks spiffy. It’s a great atmosphere for families because of the relaxed atmosphere, plenty of seating and cheap ticket prices. Even the drunks were well-behaved (there was reasonably-priced booze for sale). It had a real community feeling lacking from bigger sporting events.

I’ve been thinking about this, on the one hand I’d prefer cricket, on the other hand Canberra has no cricket to watch.

So in the absence of a national 20-20 league I guess baseball it is for summer sport (that and the Capitals).

Dang, I am a bit annoyed I missed the second Saturday game as it sounded like a corker. I went to the Friday game and was impressed. The grounds were in great condition, the stadiums gave a great view and the tickets/food/drinks were all very reasonably priced. It was a bit chilly, but once it warms on, nothing like spending an evening with a hot dog, a beer and a ballgame.

Thanks, I stand corrected. Charge ahead, Cavs!

They won two home games against Melbourne, the first 5-2 and the second 9-8 in an exciting back and forth game that went into two extra innings and a stunning final play making the Cavalry victorious.
As D999 said, the next home game is Thursday 2 December and also on the Friday and two games on the Saturday, all against Adelaide.
It is great fun and the players are all very accessible offering to sign autographs and chat with kids and fans after the games. Even if you haven’t ever watched a game or sit on the fence about it or even love it, the games offer a fun and engaging atmosphere and the food and drink are actually reasonably priced.
Tickets are cheap too so come to a game and see if you like it!

Agreed, it was a real community event and great atmosphere. It was cheap, a lot of fun and the new stadium looks amazing.

It was the first time I had been to a baseball game and I really enjoyed it.
Definitely heading out to the next home game on Thursday 2 December against the Adelaide Bite.

They won last week. 5-4 from memory

And Canberra United (Go W-League!)

Too bad the Cav’s haven’t won a game yet (as far as I know.)
