Can Canberra find a home for a hackerspace?

hackerspace

This just in from Chris at Make Hack Void:

Hi RiotACT,

As some of you already know, Make Hack Void (The Canberra Hackerspace) has been given October as the formal date Bulldozers will come knocking. The Downer Business park, where MHV resides, will be redeveloped into affordable units/housing plus a commercial district.

A possible site option in Hughes has fallen through so we are now back looking for something suitable.

MHV is a community workshop that runs regular workshops like ‘Arduino programming’ and ‘Build your own Quadcopter’ and as a place where members can use the tools/facilities. Other cool things that have come from MHV are a Pedal Powered Cinema, the MHVBoard (An arduino clone), Canberra UAV, a Maker Uncoference, a place for international and interstate visitors to explore and a place where props are built for local theatre/movies, interstate theatre and international needs.

Do you know of a space? Is there an empty building in your vicinity? Can our hackerspace crash on your couch for a while?

why not contact a local scout troop? I’m sure you can rent the hall for a pretty low price. Local Hams use their halls all over the country

A lot of vacant office space in the Traeger Court business park off Thynne Street at Bruce…

Query are they after somewhere they can use at a peppercorn rental, or commercial rates?

You could approach the ANU about using Lennox House A block – seems unused.

I can’t offer too many suggestions unfortunately, however I would like some info about the group / organisation, is there a web site?

I think Chris and friends could probably construct their own building from used pizza boxes. So all they need is land…

…we can even use the collection of Club Mate bottles for windows!

Fitter’s Workshop?

Yarralumla Brickworks?

Or one of the huge empty barns at EPIC?

The old submarine transmitter hall building?

Old petrol station?

perhaps a low volume tourist location like the Rail Museum would be perfect for this? It’s only open like once a month or something if I recall from my last attempted visit, and being a rail location may have some big spaces. Also it’s a little bit awesome for the steampunk kinda vibe no??

It sounds smelly.
