Our own national art gallery seems so tame when compared to Switzerland. When can Canberrans expect to see giant turds on the south side of the lake? http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/08/12/2332079.htm

A giant inflatable dog poo by American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from an exhibition in the garden of a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a greenhouse window before it landed again, the museum said Monday.

The art work, titled Complex Sh*t, is the size of a house.

The wind carried it 200 metres from the Paul Klee Centre in Berne before it fell back to Earth in the grounds of a children’s home, museum director Juri Steiner said.

[ED – so I think the question is do we want more confronting public art and are we willing to pay for it?]

I’ll sell you a real life dog turd for $5000. It will be an original and you can keep it for your private collection. For good measure I’ll suggest the complexity in it is identifying the breed of dog from which it came.

All old hat! Manzoni was bottling his own crap more than 40 years ago already! Google Merda d’artiste and you should easily find an image – if you are so inclined.

shouldn’t that post be in the dam thread?

under “water purification”??

bottled, even.

I like public art.

I wouldn’t even mind a giant dog poo by the lake.
Art doesn’t have to be beautiful to be good art.

But poo art is already out there – Robertson has a permanent giant poo don’t they?

Oh joy. Another “public art sucks” thread! And with such a tangential connection to Canberra – in fact, let’s face it, with absolutely no connection.

Just another chance for the public art-hating readers of the Riot Act to spout the same drivel.

I can’t wait for the next “Recumbent bicycles are gay” thread. Or perhaps for another “Bicycle lanes on roads / bike owners should pay rego” thread.

Good old Riot Act. Nothing if not predictable.

I’m sure you meant “small number of RiotACT commenters rather than the whole endeavour”? Hmm?

Well, I’d actually really like to see a giant turd in Canberra as art! No hating at all. Just lots of laughing, laughing, laughing. And I’d never heard of recumbent bikes as gay, but now that you mentioned it…

Maybe we could invite Christo to wrap up the giant turd in white blankets. A great big present from the ACT people to the Legislative Assembly?

Giant turds wrapped up?

I don’t know if Stanhope, Barr, Gallagher, Pratt, Foskey, Smyth and Hargreaves would like to be wrapped up in a blanket together.

We already have enough “Complex Sh1t” in Canberra – just look at the stuff alongside the GDE.

Wont be any shortage of hot air to fill em thats for sure.

There is every possibility that Complex Shit of the inflatable kind will be on display come the election campaign later in the year.

I have no problem with ‘public’ art. I just have a problem with taxpayer funded public art.

This sounds right up the Stanhope Government’s alley I have to say. I think ‘Complex ****’ has a new home in the ACT.

Fine if it is paid for privately, but sure bet it won’t as private money knows that most people find this stuff disgusting and utterly banal.

This revolting ‘art’ is just another assault on our values. These people don’t hold back when it comes to scraping the gutter for something ‘innovative’ and ‘sensational’ (creepy, sexualised pictures of kiddies included).
