Can you help the Museum of Australian Democracy with this t-shirt?

julia gillard t-shirt

The very serious looking Campbell Rhodes at the Museum of Australian Democracy is trying to track down those responsible for the above t-shirt which was worn by guests at an Old Parliament House wedding in 2010.

The shirt was created for a wedding; all guests at the ceremony, held in the Old Parliament House gardens, were required by the bride and groom to wear the shirts. It features caricatures of both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott.

The museum has taken this T-shirt into its collection because it is a contemporary example of the use of clothing to deliver a political message. It is a personal statement of support for a politician and political party, showing how politics can be a very personal thing among passionate supporters of politicians, parties and causes. It allows us to tell a great story about this aspect of Australian political life. But the story is incomplete. That’s where you come in!

We’d like to know more about the background of this shirt. Who designed it and why? How many copies were there and how many copies still exist? If you know anything about this unusual item of clothing, we’d love to hear from you.

If you can help us, contact us via the blog, by email or by phone (02) 6270 8222. Maybe you have your own story to tell.

C’mon you know you just wanna go out and say it, don’t try and be coy.

Be coy – you know what happens when your outlandish about your dislike for homosexuals – Gay Crash!! will you have enough disco in your collection to handle them? enough glitter to satiate their sparkly needs? Careful i hear they flash mob houses now 😛

[Please note that all things are said in jest – Gay Crash is more than welcome to flash mob my place, i have no disco but i’ll do my best to make you smile] 😀

Damn. now you went and spoiled the surprise of where the next gaycrash is. The suspense has been broken.

Gay marriage has been done to death here. If you agree with it, yay – you’ll fit right in, if you disagree prepare to get flamed.

I know, it’s terrible isn’t it?

People argue that a minority group deserves to receive legal discrimination that keeps them from accessing the same social institutions as the rest of us, and then people call them on the inherent prejudice behind their beliefs.

What a disgrace.

Just having Julia Gillard’s head on something doesn’t qualify it as “use of clothing to deliver a political message”.

Rudd wants it on a plate – as a dish to be eaten cold.

If there were indeed Tony Abbott teeshirts and Julie teeshirts, then clearly there’s no “message of support for a political party” as per the above and it doesn’t fit with the acquisition policy unless there’s more of a story, which they clearly don’t know – so, does it belong in the collection, or just at CMAG? I’d say CMAG – local wedding wit & humour. Or perhaps it doesn’t warrant collecting. Just having Julia Gillard’s head on something doesn’t qualify it as “use of clothing to deliver a political message”. Maybe “use of a caricature of a famous person on clothing for fun” …

If you were planning to make me wear something like that to your wedding, you should make sure you have some space in the cupboard for a re-gifted fondue set.

Could Jules have a future as a marriage celebrant? Although, given her views on gay marriage, presumably she would refuse to cater to that part of the market…

Because Dungfungus crashed his Delorian in 1955.

Yes, let’s let a failed priest who’s never had a real job in his life out of the closet to become our PM instead. Awesome.

The only “failed priest” in the Labor camp I can think of is the speaker. Is this who you mean? He has all the right qualifications like being treacherous, a big spender (with other people’s money of course) and he cross-dresses. Absolutely perfect.

When the person took it off and handed it over, why didn’t they ask for details then?

The shirt has a mistake.

I read the Sun Herald on a regular basis and believe her name is spelled with an ‘r’ on the end.

Well, it’s not gay marriage.

It’s just marriage.

It looks so quaint and so June 2010. Julia smiling!

If Julia went, surely the Deputy PM would take over?

If you are talking about an election, then the people will decide.

I agree it is a politcal statement. But I dont know its a statement of support. To me it sais, “Go, Julia. You are sooooo 2010”
