Can You Help Us Get This 2 Year Construction of a Playground Finished?

A playground (on the hill that Thynne Street in Bruce encircles) has been under construction for nearly 2 years and I don’t know how to go about putting pressure to get it opened. As you can see from my pictures, today, it is pretty much ready to go. The sad part is that this is the state it’s been in for 6 months now.

Here are three pictures showing how close it is to being finished:

Signs say that it’s waiting on an inspection….OK, inspect it!

Another sign says see site supervisor office, of which there is none.

Every week, neighborhood kids break the fence down and play there, so if it’s actually dangerous, then someone should do something about this. #lawsuit

Sign a letter in January saying it may be open by Christmas. WTF?
Is he saying he will open it retrospectively or is he talking the following Christmas?

Does he even read his press releases.

Get the lord mayor onto it.

Anyone know if this playground is now open? I wrote to Alistair Coe who followed this up with Simon Corbell, as the responsibility fell within his portfolio.

The response that I received was that several defects needed to be rectified before the playground could be opened. Minister Corbell states in his letter (signed in January) that the playground might be opened prior to Christmas.

Did this happen?

It’s spreading – went past the playground at Playtpus Shops in Ngunnawal last night and it was surrounded in temporary fencing too, looked like the softfall there was getting a going over.

What’s odd is that TAMS and our glorious leader have never been shy about putting out a media release in the past.

It definitely hasn’t been like that for 6 months. I was up there with my wife and nearly 2y.o son approximately 4 weeks ago. There was no fencing up and he played quite happily. There were about 6 or so kids playing at the same time.

Not sure when the fencing did go up, but it definitely wasn’t there 4 weeks ago.

One wonders if there is work to come (shade structure?) or if something is broken there then.

Jokes aside, I’ve had great responses when sending complaints to the Opposition instead of the Government. My understanding is that if the Opposition writes to a Minister about a complaint from a constituent, the Government MUST respond within 30 days.

I’ve had timely responses 4 times as a result – twice for the damaged Coppins Crossing bridge, once for damaged and dangerous play equipment, and once for a mate who had an enormous pothole out the front of his house – and he’d contacted the ‘Fix my street’ people for a year without result. By the time the Shadow minister had contacted the Government, the hole was fixed within 24 hours (no exaggeration).

So whilst I’ve never written to Coe, my experience has been exceptional with two of the other Shadow ministers.

Good luck!

Since it’s comedy corner time… I’ve also heard there’s this mover and shaker on the Belconnen Community Council…

Philistines. It’s an art installation, “Play Prevented”. Cost a fortune and is by a very important international installation artist.

The real danger is the kids growing up to form a competent government.

Please think of the children. Hold them back as much as we can!

Put the fence on freecycle

Was this put in as part of the Liberty housing development (collectively 29 Thynne St, Independent Property Group), or is it more recent? Maybe their body corp might know?

Just last week did a couple of laps of Thynne Street trying to figure out how to get up near there. Is there parking near the park?

We have one in Macgregor, corner of Refshauge and Rowland…..about 2 years now, still no chains or swings on the swing set, the rest of the playground will need to be replaced from age by the time they open it. A certain construction company to blame or is this government again??

If it’s actually dangerous, those kids would have been hurt by now. I say the only dangerous thing is the fencing around it; kids could really hurt themselves breaking it down every week. So, why don’t you just get a few neighbours together and remove the fencing altogether? You’d be improving safety and getting yourselves some free fencing at the same time. Everyone wins!

Geez, a bit of shade would be nice to go with those benches.

Maybe that’s what they’re waiting for.

Write to rattenbury@act.gov.au – he is the Minister for Territory and Municipal Services.
