Can you ride a motorbike in your own backyard?

Our charming neighbours ride not one, but two motorbikes round and round their backyard and tonight, on the road (with a toddler on the front with no helmet on) at 7pm every night.

This is driving me slowly insane as I have 2 children under 3 that Im trying to get to sleep at 7pm, and Im about to blow my top.

So, are they allowed to do this? Not the road bit, thats definately illegal, but in their own backyard?

These are the kind of people who probably wouldn’t like to be woken up at say, 5.30 a.m.!!! I doubt the bag of nails will work, they’ll just land flat on the ground and go to waste. When they are out on the road, just video the evidence for future police involvement and traffic offenses. Unregistered, uninsured, no helmet, no licence, noisy exhaust, carry pillion unlawfully….there has to be at least a couple hundred in fines there if not a slap on the hand.

Couple of hundred? The unreg/uninsured combo is $1080 alone. Probably north of $1500 in fines. Well worth the trouble…

And crankymummy, no PM service on this board, sadly, but feel free to email oziguana (A t) yahoo . c0m if you are wanting to talk a little more. Can’t go into any more detail on the forum sorry.

hehe,
Be funny if your neighbours read RiotAct….wonder if they are sitting there wondering who the dickheads on motorbikes are?

Best cure for this is a trip to Bunnings and buy a bag of Dynamic Lifter. A generous application over the fence under cover of darkness will render their backyard uninhabitable for a few days.

Captain RAAF. Can I borrow your engine? Thinking that if I feed the exhaust into the neighbours shed I may have a permanent / final solution.

@ #4, lol, a Chrysler by any chance ? Cue the blues brothers music

*groan* oh well I guess Ill just have to suck it up. along with all the other stupidily noisy at stupid hours things they tend to do.
I havent approached them about it, Im all bark and no bite.
My problem is ill probably wait till it happens again and go absolutely ballastic

ozi – ahem, cough, it could well be…
can you send Private messages on here!?

I had some really crappy neighbours who did all sorts of antisocial things. It was a guvvie, and they decided to chop down every single tree in the backyard and burn them in a pit in the backyard. They used to jump the fence when I was out and have one footy team in my back garden, one in theirs. They used to drive their car across my front garden to park it outside their front door. Frequent presence of cops to break up the violent domestics, arrest the teenage thug son and confiscate his collection of baseball bats. And so on. Not much I could do because as a single female with a young child, I knew they watched me going to work each day and knew my house was empty, so I really didn’t want to confront them.

However, when they were having a bbq or p!ss-up in their backyard, I used to choose that time to move the dustbowl I called a lawn. I think they were too thick to work out it wasn’t a coincidence.

I sold the Lyons house eventually to get away from them and the parade of drunks and junkies that was their mates.

Toss a couple of bags of nails and screws into their backyard. You’ll get hours of silence from each puncture.

AFAIK its private property so Road Rules dont apply, HOWEVER check with council for noise restrictions – particularly with motors.

Hmm…Interesting, my neighbors too, like to ride their motorbike around in the backyard of the house also at around 7pm. I smile, rocking back and forth in my chair where my gaze ultimately turns to my garage, which adjoins their property and is directly adjacent to their house, and I picture the 440 Cubic inch V8 I will have soon being test run, with no exhaust, on the days they like to have their little BBQ get togethers on the patch of filth they call a patio….which is even closer to my garage than the bedrooms of their children. Anyone ever heard a big block running straight out extractors……real Mayor of Hiroshima stuff, I can assure you!

Don’t waste your time talking to them, just get even, or my own personal fave, up the ante!

Hahahaha you should do de-escalation seminars. Brilliant!

Unfortunately it’s probably no different to say having your neighbor mow the lawn every evening.

I too feel your pain with trying to get kids to sleep at 7pm when the neighborhood isn’t necessarily doing the same, but generally it isn’t a problem as I have the luxury of quite neighbors for the most part… I’m sorry it’s not the same for you.

It probably comes under noise nuisence. The government is *meant* to protect you from noise nuisence, but many will have experienced the apathy that meets a noise complaint. However, you should still do something. I think you have two options… for the on-going problem, ACT Government (somewhere in their listing in the white pages is a Noise Complaints listing), and for the immediate problem, try calling the police.

Are they trail bikes? Many (most) trail bikes are too noisy to be legal in built-up areas.

They are allowed to do this in their own back yard to their hearts content, unfortunately. Australian Road Rules don’t apply (obviously) and the only real argument you would have may be a welfare one for the toddler without the helmet, but that is more likely care and protection not Police. You could make a noise complaint, but again this wouldn’t be likely to be acted on so early in the night. If they were doing it at 10 or 11, maybe.

I’m guessing going around and speaking to them hasn’t worked?

And finally, is this happening in a strangely shaped street in Richardson by any chance?
