September is Save the Koala month and to celebrate, the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra is letting the public decide the name for its new baby koala.

The new koala joey is the first to be born at the National Zoo and is already bringing joy to visitors and staff alike.

But if you have a koala-ty name in mind for the zoo’s new star you’ll have to get in quick – you only have until this Sunday (20 September) to make your suggestion on the zoo’s Facebook post.

The winning name will be announced at the end of the month.

Some suggestions so far include names from the Ngunnawal language, including Winyu (sun), Dyurra (stars), Kanbi (fire), Gamburra (flowers), Kagu (night) and Kumburu (shadow of a tree).

But our favourite so far is Berra (for Can-bear-a).

If you can think of a name better than Koaly McKoalaface, comment on the Facebook post below!
