Paintball teams from Canberra performed well on the weekend of 13 and 14 August in Sydney competing in round 3 of the Australian Super 7s series, taking 3 podium places.
In the Division 2 (‘Semi-Pro’) final, the draw brought together for the first time Canberra teams Thundercats and Uprising. Thundercats bounced back to form to take first place at the tournament with a narrow win. Uprising managed to tie the game 1 all with milliseconds on the clock to send the match in to sudden death one vs one phase, in which Thundercats’ Guy Manton managed to edge Uprising’s David Turner.
The win lifted Thundercats to 3rd place in the series ladder with 78 points, 4 points behind Uprising on 82 points, which moved to the top of the series ladder by virtue of its second placing. Sydney teams fill the other top 4 placings (NBK in 2nd place on 80 points and Shenanigans in 4th place on 76 points).
Round 4 will be held in late November with all top 4 teams in contention for the series Championship, and possible elevation to Division 1 (‘Pro’) in 2012.
Uprising B featured in the Division 3 Final against Sydney team Misfitz, which they had also not met in the round games. Down 1 nil, Uprising B managed to convincingly win the 2nd game, but Misfitz found something extra in the third to win the Division 3 final 2 points to 1. Uprising B’s 2nd place points still lifted them 10 points clear of their nearest rival on the Division 3 Series board, and barring a serious drop in form they should move on to take out the series after Round 4 in November.
Other Canberra teams competing in Division 3 did not fare so well, with ACT Notorious finishing in 7th place, the all female Divas team in 10th place overall, and the new Canberra team Death Squad finishing in 9th place.
In the Pro division (Division 1), Canberra’s Apocalypse finished in 4th place, narrowly losing their positional playoff, although they did manage to convincingly beat their Divisional winner in the round games. The result sees them secure in 4th place on the Division1 series ladder.
