Canberra 15th Most Expensive City to Live in... when will we get a break?

As The Australian reported yesterday the cost of living in Australia is rapidly rising amongst world standards. While Canberra is usualy ommited from these stories, the full list can be found here showing that Canberra is now the 15th most expensive city in the world to live.

I don’t understand why the cost of living here just keeps rising, look at the ACT Government fees increasing over the last few months.

As johnboy reported yesterday CTP is rising 8%. From 1 July passes to Tidbinbilla went from $20 – $30 for an annual pass. Sorry in my ecconomics 101 class, when you have an increase in demand and it’s effectively an infinite product price should drop not increase. Increasing price should actually decrease visitation.

What new taxes, levies and fees will the government introuduce next?

I used to be one of those poor students once (and for some years), but with enough time and hard work got to be a highly paid consultant instead. A bit of struggle is good for the soul.

It’s rough though for those who are not the highly paid consultants, contractors and public servants. These fees and charges aren’t adjusted to salary.

Agreed, but that’s the way the world works. Interesting discussion in The Economist blogs about whether it should work that way or not. And it’s not all government fees and charges. General prices were also using in creating the ratings.

Try being a student in Canberra – as fun as it is to think this city is only filled with:

the ANU and UC students beg to differ! Trying to study in this city is a bit of a joke… and the ANU is not very supportive… I don’t know about UC. Still, they’re supposed to be the best years of your life right? And all students love mee goreng. That is an indisputable fact! 😉

Agreed, but the presence of some impoverished students doesn’t negate what I said. Sounds like things haven’t changed much from my student days, when mee goreng would have been a feast. And I walked nine miles, barefoot, through the snow.

The other things is that we are a country town living a city lifestyle. We’ve got best of both worlds, and it’s expensive to upkeep.

But I still can’t believe that we’re above Yokohama, Japan…. Serious, WTF?

To be fair, the quality of life for most is very good here.

The article you’ve linked to is a different survey: the
Economist Intelligence Unit
has published the list that everyone’s talking about, which doesn’t deign to survey Canberra.

In any event, I would have thought that food, rent, drinks and electricity would rate much more highly in their calculations than a $10 increase in annual national park fees.

Lots of highly paid consultants, contractors and public servants, and a captive market. What do think is going to happen?
