Last week Janed wowed us with colour pictures taken by her father (the legendary local bookseller Teki Dalton) in 1959.

She’s come back for another round this week with the last of them.

This is the last of them with the now legendary Hotel Civic on the corner of Northbourne and Alinga Streets.

By way of comparison and positioning here’s the Google Street view of that corner today:

The other two this week are views of Old Parliament House amongst the paddocks.

Here’s a slideshow of all the photographs in this series:

Yeah they are all Kodachrome. The only other colour slides of Canberra in 1959 are the War Memorial-with the Japanese midget submarine outside the building. Because there were over 300 other slides scanning was going to take forever and the quality and colour wasn’t very good so I copied them with my DSLR using a macro lens. Here are 2 photos showing set-up (trying to avoid buying a slide copier!) http://www.flickr.com/photos/28568913@N03/

it’s good to see the green grass, and northborne ave looked alot better before it got older and delapidated

I thought I recognised the lady in the orange cardigan. Now I know who she is and I remember Teki’s mum serving in the shop. Those pics bring back nice memories. I had forgotten all about that small mound in front of Parliament House.
Thanks Jane.

PH looks a lot better without the tent city out the front…

I appreciate these photo’s. They show the country town known as Canberra, not today’s version, which is a city.

Love it! More please!

A fine series Janed…bought back strong memories of when I first arrived in Canberra from Perth in 1964. Thanks. But what I’d like to know is how you got such good scans from the old transparencies?

I feel so dang conservative looking at these pics. Looking at the one of Northbourne, the 1959 version looks so much more appealing.

As always, thanks again for sharing these pics. 🙂

Thank you Janed!
