Canberra airport freight hub

Well, it’s on the agenda again. Troy Williams has supported proposals for Canberra Airport become an airfreight hub, see: Williams supports Canberra airfreight hub. Probably a good idea, unless you live in Tralee.

“On the whole I think there’s more to worry about in life than noise, that’s all.”

Yeah, like having a burning A380 plow into your house at 2 in the morning after it’s been shot down by members of the Tralee Liberation Army who’ve had enough of the noise! 🙂

Won’t someone think of the children of Tralee?

Heh.

On the whole I think there’s more to worry about in life than noise, that’s all.

I guess you live in Queanbeyan VN. You don’t care then if all those 380s fly over your town and disturb the sleep of all those children with no fathers?

The governmnet needs to act now to lock in flightpaths over Tralee and other low rent (and pretend Canberra) suburbs like Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra. Good on Snow for developing the site and creating new opportunities.

snow has to bow to Air Services and Federal MPs and senators

I think that legally, introducing curfews will be tricky. Snow stated at the time he bought the airport that the big attraction for him was the lack of a curfew. He is also very keen for some kind of rail link to happen, so he can bring that freight in all night, when Sydney’s closed, and load it onto the train.
There’s already a plan for a branch line going to the airport and linking with the current Sydney/Canberra rail line.

He wants to be able to maximise his investment, 24 hours a day.

He also wants to bring in jumbos all night, process the passengers (immigration, customs etc) and have them depart for their various destinations. It would be very convenient for people from many countries to be able to land at times when Sydney’s closed.

Yep – it’s the take offs we get in teh NOrth

Better to introduce a curfew now, when it doesn’t put anyone out, than to try to do it in years to come when flights have become established, and people are protesting because they can’t sleep.

AG: The devil’s advocate in me says “well, why didn’t they buy that land themselves if they wanted to be sure that no-one would develop on it?”.

Obviously this thread is full of people who have excellent aviation creditioanls regarding aircraft noise.

Where do you think the aircraft arrive from? just over Tralee? ether heard about inclement weather that distorts the noraml traffic pattern?

Also what happens when they depart? they vanish and nobody hears a thing when 360,000+ kgs of B747-400F lifts off at 2am and departs to the north and then turns West heading South giving almost all of Canberra a nice wake up call?

Idiots! once its built and has been given the nod theres no going back.

Wonder were Troy lives?

Mr Evil – your comment about diverting flights to Canberra is the point exactly. With the current Gov focussed on road transport I understand the plan by the Snow’s is this:

Cargo planes hit canberra at midnight. Cargo is then loaded into trucks and can be in Melb by 7am and in Syd by 3 am. At the moment there are flights that stop in Syd and then go onto Melb – at great expense to the companies.

AND if someone does do the VFT thingy then the airport will also be in a position to access that over night when commuters are not using it….

THIS is why the are protecting the north and south approaches to the airport – and fair enough too!

“Mean of them to build a main road near your house without giving you any warning.”

Mean of them to build an airport near your house without giving you any warning!

I think that the reality is that the airport will eventually be forced to introduce a curfew at some stage. The other thing is, how many frieght companies are really going to suddenly divert their aircraft into Canberra, when most of their cargo is destined for Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane or Adelaide anyway?

Sepi, I can’t imagine you’ll be woken up every night by a fleet of Polar, DHL, UPS or Flying Tiger 747F aircraft operating into Canberra in the next 20 years.

The tralee thing is a part-furphy, run by the airport. As someone else said, other suburbs in CANBERRA already cop the noise. And will continue to, as will other parts of Canberra. There’s no curfew, and they’ll do what they need to do. Wind direction for one affects air movements.

I do find it interesting that so many people are seemingly happy for other people to cop noise at 1am, so long as it doesn’t affect them. Don’t you realise that if someone cops noise, you are all at the same risk?

The airport runs great spin campaigns, but the reality is less pleasant.

Troy,
No curfew, no road upgrade, no vote for you.
Capisce?

And all those proles having jobs to go to.

And I would invent aircraft noise for what reason?

I can live with the level we have currently, but I want the airport to have a curfew, and I don’t support this idea of Canberra as a freight hub/noise sink for Sydney and the Canberra airport owners to get all the profits.

c’mon, aircraft noise in hackett???

what, with the windows open at 2am and none of those noisy crickets, screetching cats or howling dogs?

i know the solution. no noisy planes at the airport, no noisy cars on the road. sure, there will be no jobs, but it will be quieter in hacket.

“Williams supports airfreight hub” – but has he consulted his mate Samuel Gordon-Stewart??

If car prangs woke you up 5 times a night every night you’d soon be complaining.

A car prang near Woden woke me up one night.

Who can I whinge to?

And the other night I heard a car go past very late – shouldn’t the road be moved?

I hear truck and car noise from the main road near my house all night long; can I have a whinge too????

This is Sh*t.

We get airport noise in Hackett already. If it goes overnight it will be a nightmare.

Well Bob McMullen is already on the record supporting that at our meeting in July: http://www.gcc.asn.au/content/view/369/326/
(Does that qualify as a “Me too” Troy? Sorry – couldn’t resist…)

So here’s how it goes: bloody Tralee goes ahead and gets developed. The residents start complaining about the 15 heavies between 1AM and 5AM every night (and they will complain because noise insulation and double glazing does nothing when you’re windows are open!), and the flights start getting spread around. Noise sharing for Tuggers and Queanbeyan.

And will Frank Pangallo be around to answer for supporting Tralee? Not bloody likely…

So I have this question for our candidates: will you invoke some legislation to protect airport operations from inappropriate development?

If not, will you revise your objections to curfews?

And wouldn’t it make more sense to build a high-speed Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne rail link anyway?

My understanding is, nobody DOES live in Tralee yet – that’s why there’s an anti-development-at-Traleee campaign – to make sure that nothing’s built there, nobody’ll live there, so nobody can then complain about the noise!
