Canberra as heaven

The SMH (actually the Herald Sun today) has a unusual blog piece today extolling the virtues of Canberra.

When you find yourself in times of trouble, here’s an easy solution: move to Canberra. You’ll be fitter, you’ll go to more cultural events, you’ll be less likely to commit suicide, you’ll use the internet more, you’ll make more money, and you’ll live longer…

Thank God it’s there, I say. If Canberra did not exist, it would be necessary to invent it.

It remains unclear why the story is accompanied by a picture of the big turd potato of Robertson (a bit less than two hours from here on the Illawarra Highway).

a boy born in the ACT during 2005 could expect to live 79.9 years, while a girl could expect to live 84.0 years. This compares with 78.5 and 83.3 years respectively, at the national level”

The mean spirited might say that the 1.4 and 0.7 years respectively are not worth it due to the added boredom – better to live fast and die a teeny tiny bit younger?

“Cycling 12%”

While in a similarly mean spirited mood (and with poor tast), it might be pointed out that the porportion of the community that cycles could well be reduced after today’s events.

By the by, David Dale generally puts forward statistical data and lets the reader make their own decision. Admittedly, his tongue is at least half planted in cheek this time.

seems to be a few people are giving canberra a fairly unfair (and inarticulate) bashing. It is just a city after all.

I put some comments in taking the thing at face value (although I am a mite sceptical of its sincerity). I referred to Sydney as the Big Sewer, which may or may not get them censored.

This appears to be very much a tongue-in-cheek — and I would suggest quite derogatory — look at life in Canberra.

It is hardly extolling the virtues of Canberra.
