Canberra Ave Speed Limit Update

Last week I filed a fix my street report about the Canberra Ave speed limit. Received a call back today from a Roads ACT rep saying that the Westbound 100 km/h speed limit was recently reviewed and the decision to implement an 80 km/h speed limit to match the Eastbound carriageway was made.

Provided signs are installed correctly, this will bring Canberra Ave’s speed limits back into line with Australian Standards for this section of the road.

The Australian Standard for Speed Controls requires that 100 km/h zones be at least 2 km in length. The 100 km/h zone on Canberra Ave is only 1 km in length.

Really, the only thing ridiculous is that Sgt Bungers wasted time on this. It’s a perfectly safe stretch for 100km/h. Everyone will just ignore it now, hence all you’ve done is made the road less safe. Get a life.

You should see the 100m of road on Streeton Dr where it intersects with Cotter Rd. It changes speeds 5 times!
From 80 to 60 to 40 back to 60 than back to 40 and to 60.

All between Dixon Dr & Cotter Rd (north bound).

I love Canberra’s bureaucracy.

Piallago Ave around the airport has a 40m stretch of signposted 80km/h before hitting 100km/h just past the traffic lights to turn into Glenora drive. I guess it’s so we can now accelerate legally…

It’s actually 300 m. Yes I am sad enough to have measured it. That said, 80 km/h zones must be 800 metres long minimum to comply with Australian Standards (unless it’s a buffer zone leading into a reduced speed limit of 30 km/h more). Hence, Airport-bound from Queanbeyan, the 300 m 80 km/h stretch is accidentally compliant with Australian Standards acting as a buffer zone. Queanbeyan bound from the Airport however needs to jump from 70 to 100, without the 80 zone to be compliant.

having that road as 100 causes some interesting incidents in the mornings (and afternoons increasingly) as fast traffic encounters the tail end of the block-up.

Another stretch of road in the A.C.T that would benefit from electronically variable speed limits for this reason!

Good work you wowser.

You have just made my commute home from work a full 9 seconds longer 🙂

Apparently the decision to lower the limit to 80 km/h was made before my fix my street suggestion. So it’s not my fault! 🙂

But hey you’ll also save 0.2 c per day in petrol 🙂

The bit from the airport to Glenora lights (I hate those fugging lights) is 70. Then on the Qbn side of the lights it goes to 80, before returning to 100, which used to be the speed for that whole stretch, from Qbn to the airport. Now it goes to 80 at the Oaks Estate Rd, and stays there past Sutton Rd, before going to 60 before you enter Qbn.

Praise the Gods. We have been saved from an eternity of damnation that travelling at 100 km/h on this horrifying strech of road would cause.

Haven’t found that girlfriend yet?

Sgt.Bungers- you should consider a career in Standards Australia.Impressive resume already.
Got a lot of time on your hands?

Absolutely ridiculous how they implement these small stretches of increased/decreased speed limits – sometimes it’s had to tell what speed you should be going. I really object when you see signs approaching roundabouts (and I’m thinking of the Johnson Drive roundabout in Calwell in this instance but have seen elsewhere), where the stretch of road beyond the speed limit sign is about 200 metres and yet they are encouraging you to go 80k’s when really, it should be the point where you are thinking about slowing down and monitoring the slowing traffic in front of you approaching the roundabout. Obviously most people would know these things, but in Canberra I don’t think anyone needs anymore encouragement to speed up. A dumb place to put a speed sign is what I am getting at.

I had a good result from using “fixmystreet”, last week. Now wondering if I could use it get our neighbours removed! That would definitely fix it up!
