They’re getting rid of some Wattles! That’s good!

They’ll probably plant more Wattles! That’s bad!

Territory and Municipal Services wishes to advise the public that work will commence this weekend (Saturday 7 September) to remove trees within the Canberra Avenue median strip between Hindmarsh Drive and the NSW border.

This work, which will mainly involve the removal of Willows, over mature Wattles and dead and dying trees from the area, will allow for a new planting corridor to be established.

Over the coming months, approximately 1,000 new trees will be planted within the median strip along the avenue. These trees will be a mix of native and exotic tree species such as Scribbly gum, She oak, Pin oaks and Atlas cedars.

Work to replant new trees is expected to be completed by the end of November 2013.

For more information on tree removal/planting programs call Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

I was a bit off the mark saying it was too big – it is in fact too heavy, and therefore maybe big? But anyway, he’s some evidence. Wouldn’t call it enough proof as a windy day would blow it around, but standing next to a tree on a non windy day may not be the cause.

Have these people never heard of Peter Andrews? Drongos.

Is it perhaps fair to say, then, that wattle’s enormous pollen particles will irritate like dust and make it easier for grass or pine allergens to get in and make things really nasty? It makes my eyes a little itchy but my mother near wattle looks like she’s crying her eyes out.

Why do you hate wattles? They are beautiful at the moment.

I love wattles too, but my missus hates them because all the pollen does a total number on her allergies/asthma, so I can see now why they may not be everyone’s favourite.

Apparently the wattle pollen is too big for use humans to breathe in and get reactions too. Agree with JB that it’s something else – maybe pines at this time of year. Mere coincidence.

That’s fine, I’m more than willing to accept that possibility, but you guys can be the ones to convince Mrs Doctor of the fact :p

I remember kids chasing me around with branches of the stuff in primary school just to see me sneeze uncontrollably.

Was YouTube invented then? Although this is clearly psychosomatic, it may still prove amusing to watch Bara…choo! and his tormentors.

Ralph Wiggum may yet grow up to be a hipster, you know.

This.

Any beauty these plants have is well eclipsed by their debilitating effect on anyone with allergies.

They’re evil in tree form.

it’s the pines.

they just pump out the pollen at the same time the wattles are in bloom

Why do you hate wattles? They are beautiful at the moment.
