Territory And Municipal Services are giving notice that they’re shutting down Canberra Avenue as part of bridge building works:

The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that Canberra Avenue will be closed in both directions between Ipswich Street and Nyrang Street from 8 pm Friday 27 January until 12 midnight Sunday 30 January 2012.

The closure is to allow scaffolding to be erected for the new bridge associated with the Monaro Highway duplication.

Barriers as well as warning and diversion signs will be erected to alert people of the closure.

A detour will be provided via the Monaro Highway, Hindmarsh Drive and Jerrabomberra Avenue.

UPDATE: There’s now another closure notice for the first weekend in February.

If only the closure started at Hindmarsh Drive and also included the closures of Thawa Drive and Pialligo Avenue.

And was permanent.

???

Thought the point was pretty obvious – permanently closing the three major roads into Queanbeyan.

Although 2600 did say Tha(r)wa Drive – presumably referring to Lanyon Drive. (The ACT portion of which used to be Tharwa Road)

Nup, my idiot radar wasnt on.

As others have stated, Tharwa Drive is 15km away………

To be fair, IIRC Lanyon Drive was called Tharwa Road, once upon a time.

Ahh good work. Right on the long weekend. Unbelievable. What incompetence and out of all the weeks they could choose.

You mean it’s a bad idea to wait until people are out of town?

I’m not defending the ACT government in any way but it ain’t a long weekend. Some of us are still working on Friday.

interesting, when I looked at the press release it says:

“The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that Canberra Avenue will be closed in both directions between Ipswich Street and Nyrang Street from
8 pm Friday 3 February until 6 am Monday 6 February 2012.

The closure will be in place again from 8 pm Friday 10 February until 6 am on Monday 13 February 2012.”

so they have obviously delayed the closure for a week.

It wouldn’t have bothered me if the closure went ahead this weekend, as it appears that these roadworks are on schedule. this is a good thing, as the duplication is many years overdue – another example of poor planning, and we might avoid a GDE/Kings Ave overpass debacle where the works never seem to have an end.

I think this is pretty good time to do it. Most Canberrans (including me) away for the weekend. Job done just before schools get back too.

At this stage I’d have to say they are doing well with this work. Can’t wait till it’s done.

Good idea. Us Queanbeyanites are sick and tired of having stupid yogis coming through our otherwise beautiful town.

Nah, this one should be fine, it hasn’t been jinxed

And in typical Canberra style, they’ll close the road to traffic, try and put the new bridge up, have it fall down, spend 6 weeks clearing the rubble, and in 4 months time, we’ll have another closure while they try and do it again.
Coz we’re Canberra, and that’s how we roll.
