ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Wednesday evening (August 24) on Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick.

About 5.30pm, the motorcyclist, a 43-year-old Flynn man, was travelling along Canberra Avenue (towards Kingston), near the Monaro Highway overpass, when a car changed into his lane and collided with him. The motorcyclist was knocked onto the median strip, losing control and flipping over the bike, injuring his shoulder.

The other vehicle has driven off without stopping.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were driving along Canberra Avenue about 5.30pm on Wednesday and may have witnessed the collision between a black Suzuki Bandit motorcycle with ACT registration and the unknown car, possibly a sedan or station wagon.

Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information may be provided anonymously.

I have taken a lesson from the Feline world when it comes to riding. A cat most of the time sees you before you see it. And they flash their head around constantly when being assaulted by stimulus so they have complete 360 degree awareness of their soroundings that is constantly being updated.

I have found that directly looking at all the drivers heads be it the back or front of them in ALL the vehicles around you gives you a bloody good idea what they are going to do and I believe gives the driver a subconcious idea that you are there (ever tried to secretly perve at a nice chick on the bus to have them turn around and stare you in the face). And to try and get away from all the cars around you and pretend they are going to come onto you or cut you off, or try to t bone you at an intersection.

I sometimes feel a bit anxious, paranoid and persecuted after thinking this way after a ride and probably look like a nutjob on speed but on the odd occasion when someone has come to cut me off from a side street I have been ready. knock on wood it keeps working.

I hope the rider is ok. I make a point of never sitting anywhere near a cager’s blindpsot. Most drivers are pretty reasonable, but there are far too many incompetent drivers out there to take any risks. I hope they catch the a-hole responsible.

I had dinner with him last night and he is OK, though still scratching his head as to how many rubber-neckers there were that didnt stop to help. Eventually two riders stopped to see if he was OK.

I think part of the issue at that spot is there a 20 second traffic light that everyone seems to race to get through. Perhaps something for ACT Roads to think about changing?

And yep, I hope they catch the idiot who failed to take responsibility for their actions too.

The loudest I hear in our suburb is a trail bike. Occasionally zooms past after midnight on nearby main road. Wakes up my toddler. Rattles windows and drowns out any TV or music with windows and shutters closed. Got to be many dB over the pollution limit.

Yeah, one of these people that spends their life trying to find something to winge about…”You had a loud party”, “Your dog barks to much”, “Don’t mow your lawn then”, “Your light is too bright shining in my window”, “Your bike is too loud”, bla bla bla. You and your toddler are not the most important things on the planet and if you believe they are then move out to a farm away from anyone else. I have never in my life found anything to complain about with any of my neighbours and I suspect that most of this persons neighbours find the most annoying noise to be the sound of their constant winging.

Exactly the sort of person I’m talking about… “made my ears bleed FFS”… What a drama queen!!! Even the username says it all…”poor me!!!”.

Let me think, how should I respond?? How bout this…

Yeah that was me, I ride every loud piped Harley in the Canberra/Queanbeyan region Mr Kunt,, sorry Hunt.

If anyone would like to know, yes, the motorcyclist who was hit is okay.
He might even have his bike back in a month or so.

#44 Eppo – I’m just joshing (and jealous). I’m sure they are just as reliable as lots of other bikes. I wouldn’t kick a Duc out of my garage if someone offered me one. (And, when I heard it, the saying was actually about Jags not Duc’s).

I feel the need to be clear that when I talk about getting loud pipes, I and I’m sure most others aren’t talking about the ear bleeding shotgun pipes that adorn harleys, but more reasonable pipes which give a more pronounced sound.

4WDs, every time. Driven by a woman on the school run? Sheer hell. Asian woman? May as well just crash youself, save them the trouble of doing it for you.

With an attitude like yours, I’m tempted to line you up in my sights as well but I’d object to your DNA plastered all over my nice clean bumper.

Wow, you’ve got some big problems. Not Mr G’s love-child are you?

No worries Ace. 😉

I am over motorbikes, one of the reasons is the cost but also the near misses & the boredom of road motorcycling (unless you are doing 200km/h………on a private road of course).

My pushbikes, particularly my MTB have taken me big time so I will be a tin topper as soon as I sell my CBR. Life is good punting down Skyline at Stromlo, no careless drivers to worry about 😛

Exactly!!! People notice loud pipes and being noticed on a bike is a good safe thing, those that don’t agree don’t speak at all from experience.

Really? So riding bikes from the age of 12, does that cout for experience?

I have no idea, I can’t account for your stupidity. Every little thing that you can do to draw attention to yourself while on a bike adds to your safety. I have definitely noticed being noticed due to being loud as has what_the. If you have not then what can I say.

Feel the need to insult to get your point across?

I have survived nearly 30 years on motorcyles without loud exhausts & there are many other riders who also do not “need” them to survive. Yep, I have had near misses but every body who rides does, bikes get smeared regardless of their exhaust note. Every one of those near misses I have used my road craft to keep me out of trouble (except for the cyclist but some people tend to act like sheep & are unpredictable).

As I said this morning, travelling to work I saw the Kwaka before I heard it & it was loud. He came up so quick behind me moving in & out of the traffic flow that all it would have taken was for him to be in my blind spot & I was concentrating on something else for it all to be over, then I would have been the prick car driver. Split seconds.

Motorcycle safety has more to do with the rider than anything else.

Yes, quite correct KB, I should not have insulted. Please excuse my harsh word, I did feel bad about it as soon as I had posted.

Of course I agree that being loud is just one thing that can be done to increase safety, but this post proves that you cannot do too much to keep yourself safe on a bike sharing the road with heavier traffic. Car/truck/bus drivers just don’t seem to understand that one simple minor mistake can cost us our lives. I agree that rider you describe was foolish and I am always concious not to sit in blind spots. It does however give me a nice feeling to know that for that second or two I am accelerating past him my loud pipes helps him to know I am there. I have never said that all you need is loud pipes to be safe on the road but they do increase your chances. I feel extremely sorry for the poor 43-year-old Flynn man in this post and it terrifies me that it could be me one day. Unfortunately I love riding too much to give it up.

Depends what you define as new I guess. It’s a 2005 model with 13,xxxkms on it now. So not brand new, but not a museum piece either. In the time I’ve owned it, the only problem I’ve had was a worn o-ring, which resulted in a fuel leak. A fifty cent part and 5 mins of effort had it back on the road again.

The reputation is probably deserved for the old bikes, but much like Alfas (or most Italians?) the newer bikes are much better. That all said, you don’t buy a Duc for something you can set and forget. They’re for enthusiasts who don’t mind a tinker or more frequent service intervals 🙂

Yah, the definately are not for the people who have no mechanical ability. Thats what Jap bikes are for.

Since we’re side tracking on pipes, when I upgrade from my GS500 Singer Sewing machine to the VTR1000 (v-twin) with pipes, I noticed a massive decline in the number of pedestrians just walking out right in front of me. I was amazed at the amount of people who’d look right at me, then proceed to walk out in front of me. The pipes definitely snap them out of it! I think it’s something to do with the brain being wired to expect a car, no car, proceed… That or they’re just not realising how much a bike will hurt you.

I slipped on one of those big white arrows on a frosty morning in Queanbeyan a few months back and ended up dropping my bike at very slow speed causing me absolutely no damage to myself at all. Even though the accident was as minor as you could possibly have on a bike two people pulled up and asked if I required assistance. One lady even offered to help me pick my bike up. I declined their offers as I was fine with only my pride hurt, but the point I am making is that I am astounded that nobody stopped to offer assistance in this instance.

On topic, I really do hope they catch the hit-and-run driver. There’s absolutely no way you could hit a bike and not know it (unless you’re off your head on something, I suppose) so hopefully this person is having a real hard time sleeping and end up handing themselves in*.

What an ignorant comment. You have no idea how I, or anyone here, drives.

There are laws against excessive noise for a reason. Riders who choose to inflict illegal noise on everyone else are displaying their disproportionate sense of self-importance and I don’t think it has anything to do with safety.

*Sigh*

I meant a collective ‘you’, as in the general community. Of course I have no idea how you in particular drive. The community, as a whole, drive fairly badly around motorcycles. Partly because we’re hard to see and partly because drivers don’t pay much attention to their surroundings to begin with. 99% (pulled out of my butt) of people drive around in a bubble.

I think we also need to acknowledge that noise is a continuous scale. My bike sounds nothing like a Harley with straight through pipes. You’ll get my agreement that they are excessive (I’m sure the sole purpose of those bikes is to turn fuel into noise). Mine is loud enough to let others, including pedestrians, know where I am & I won’t be changing that for the opinions of a wowser on an internet forum.

Besides, as Holden Caulfield alluded to – a Duc can never be too loud…. 🙂

Yes there were a lot of people who witnessed the accident, and the fact that they didn’t stop to see if the motorcyclist was ok is disgusting. I hope their consciences get the better of them and they come forward with any information they can remember. The car driver needs to be caught, to hit someone and then drive off is supremely cowardly behaviour.

Personally I’d rely on defensive riding any day over ‘noisy pipes’.

Absoloutely. Riding defensively is far more effective than anything else. I definitely notice noisy bikes when driving, but that may also be because as a rider, I’m more aware of motorcycles to begin with. As I said above, I’ve noticed a difference, but you could also argue that I’ve just been a bit lucky or I’ve become a better rider over time & don’t get caught in those situations any more. Without definite proof either way, I’ll keep the pipes for now.

And no, I don’t ride a green Kawasaki. I ride a red Ducati and save any speeding for open roads, away from other people. Wouldn’t be caught dead on a Kawasaki… 🙂

“possibly a sedan or station wagon.”

Well that narrows it down!!!

Think people might be deluding themselves about the effectiveness of noisy pipes. Can’t recall a time when I’ve ever noted a noisy pipe within a car cabin, and I don’t play music when I drive. Mind you, some people even have trouble registering emergency services in their vehicles.

Drivers are insulated from their surroundings and you have to treat them as such.

Personally I’d rely on defensive riding any day over ‘noisy pipes’.

Well, I tend to agree. There are some fools out there with ridiculously loud “look-at-me” pipes, and they sure don’t fit them for safety reasons. Audible, but not antisocially loud would be the best way to go. My daily ride, on the other hand, is a bit too quiet. It is bright yellow though…

I agree, I have never had loud pipes on any of my road bikes. It just screams look at me & I didnt want that attention from the police, my bike had 133hp in 230kg anyway, its plenty fast enough.

You are wong on the second point to a degree, I used to work up at Dickson & we used to knock all the loud bikes back same when I was on the road as an or road inspector. It takes 10 minutes on most bikes to change the pipes so as soon as it cleared, within 1/2 an hour of leaving the test station they can be loud again.

Rule #1 is be seen, so I was astounded one day when tootling (in the cage) along the Parkway I spotted a bike doing about 120-130 coming up behind me in the other lane. Just as I expected him to pass, suddenly there was nothing, he was gone. I know not why but the rider had decided suddenly it was time to do the speed limit and had parked himself smack-bang in my blind-spot.

For my first bike I couldn’t justify the cost of pipes. I’m bike-less at the moment but next time around they’ll be on the must haves list. Be seen / be heard!

I always try to ride alongside cars when I’m in the lane beside them, so that there is no way they cannot see me. Noisy pipes also help.

But there is no avoiding some of the idiots on the road.

The worst?

4WDs, every time. Driven by a woman on the school run? Sheer hell. Asian woman? May as well just crash youself, save them the trouble of doing it for you.

From a person on site shortly afterwards: “So pissed even under arrest he couldn’t stop giggling about it.”

Hope they catch the bastard, lock him up and throw away the key. The stocks are too good for that kind.

This makes me sick. I can understand that accidents like this happen, but for someone to knowingly drive off, leaving behind a someone with potentially life threatening injuries really shocks me.

With the roadworks going on there at the moment there is usually heaps of traffic at that time as well; surely someone must have witnessed this?

What are the chances that the driver didn’t want anyone to smell his foul breath?

That is pretty poor. And you’d think that, anyone witnessing a car wipe out a motorbike and then drive off, would have contacted police pronto.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour from the driver. Hope theyre caught and dragged through the street.

Open your eyes people and actually have a look before moving your 1.5 tonnes of steel around.
