Canberra Bands Doing Well in JJJ Unearthed Contest

As reported on The RiotAct last week, Triple J are now running their Unearthed competition on-line and it appears that the rest of Australia is noticing something that us Canberrans have known for years, that we have a decent quality music scene .

Scouring through the various charts on Triple J’s Unearthed Website – Unearthed – , Canberra bands have a very noticeable presence (somewhat dominant given the size of the place). It also seems that the good people from Triple J are noticing us as well, with a few of them guest reviewing our local bands with suggestions that something is going on here.

Of course there are always detractors, namely Richard Kingsmill, who despite giving Young and Restless (currently placed no 3 in the overall charts) a glowing review, felt the need to lay the boot in a little by stating “I’d be angry if i lived in Canberra too”…. but I am sure we can forgive Mr Kingsmill of his greivances, given the succes that Canberra bands are having in the competition.

Canberra’s JustBands has a list of some of the bands in the competition. I encourage everyone to check them out and rate their favourite bands . Hopefully we can all have a part in putting Canberra back on the national music map.

look at the number of bands on this thing…. its into the thousands… with accessability (sp?)of DIY home recording these days I truely believe that the best unsigned bands will be in this comp.. its a comp laden with percieved opportunity and is a far more effective marketing tool than myspace.

Abucus – cool. I had an old school version 2.0 abucus with the red and blue beads butthe paint started to flake and it was never the same after that.

I would like to think that you are good but don’t you want to be compared to the best the rest of Australia has to offer, not just tech savvy MySpace wannabe self promoters, which may or may not make up a number of those people outside the ACT (because there would be no one like that here 😉

Phhh… Computers. I voted on my abacus.

that is certainly a factor but the population of of cities like sydney and melbourne should counter that…

and once a song gets to a certain level in the various charts it gets reviewed by people from triple j and other guest and power users… these peoples votes have more sway than just somebody who signs up and to review their mates band..

also once a band makes the charts it is more open to public scrutiny.

Damn you and your fact-based logic, Nik! We’re just that awesome, damnit.

Not wishing to detract from the quality of music in this town but is it worth considering that the success of Canberra bands in this, a web based medium, could also have something to do with the high rate of computer usage in Canberra (and therefore among Canberra bands and their supporters) and in fact could be seen as a flaw in the system being used by the J’s?

it takes about a week for songs and reviews to actually get posted… so it seems they are being very careful in regards to what goes up.. which can only be a good thing..
