Canberra Bashing - what's not to like?

I’ve always had a bit of a laugh at Canberra bashers over the years, especially those who’ve never actually visited our town. While writing a bit of a blog on the subject, ( http://www.mocs.com.au ), I was reminded of a couple of the more bizarre reasons why people “hated” Canberra.

This includes us not having any “real” pubs in the ACT, not having a surf beach and my favourite, on becoming ill shortly after arriving in Canberra my interstate guest blamed the multitude of roundabouts in Canberra for her illness.

I’d be interested in hearing other bizarre reasons for not liking Canberra.

I’m from Sydney, I get why people have a problem with Canberra.

However, the complaints people have these days about Canberra are no longer valid. Weirdly, and horribly enough the night life in Canberra is now better than in Sydney. Mind you, that has nothing to do with Canberra discovering some inner beat, it just comes down to a city living in its own economic bubble thanks to the massive employment in the public sector, compared to Sydney, where casual workers are trying to figure out how to pay the rent as well as eat.

Times are tough in the big smoke. Other than the lack of public transport, Canberra looks okay these days.

Its because Canberra keeps raising taxes, slashing services, wasting public money, stifling business, giving hand out….etc. I know because the TV told me so.

Damn that Canberra, he’s such an arsehole.

hmmm reasons people hate canberra… some of the discussions i’ve had with people

Person: “Canberra is a hole”
Me: When was the last time you were in canberra?
Person: “like umm year 7 for an excursion”
Me: /facepalm

Person: “Can’t go clubbing every night in canberra”
Me: when was the last time you went clubbing on a tuesday night?
Person: ummm….. never
Me: exactly, if there was demand, then they would be open on a tuesday
Person: what about pubs?
Me: 5+ open, all near one another…

Person: “Public Servants don’t do work”
Me: correct, how did you know?

MOCS, you wouldn’t be a slack public servant with nothing else to do at work other than write a blog about negative perceptions of Canberra, thereby perpetuating the myth about Canberra being full of slack public servants? If so, I love your work.

🙂

when people go on about canberra’s roundabouts, I always ask them if they really prefer waiting at red lights.

I say let them bash Canberra – prevents the posers and wannabees from moving here.

Well it looks like that now I won’t have to watch the new Sherlock Holmes movie!

It’s full of astroturfers trying to drum up traffic for their sh.t blogs.

I’m a bit hurt by your cynical comment Woody! A cynical comment, I might add, that wouldn’t be out of place on my new website, “The Ministry Of Cynical Supposition”!

Anyway I’m off to look up what an “astroturfer” is as on the surface at least it sounds spacey and earthy all at the same time.

Deano, where is this list of targets for nuclear attack?

It’s just the like the United States.

Great place, shame about the people.

Apparently Canberra is on the target list (towards the bottom of the fifth page, just before Wellington in NZ) for whenever nuclear war breaks out – wouldn’t want to be near here when the big one drops.

Personally I’m a big fan of Canberra bashing – Convincing mouth breathers that Canberra’s so dire, they don’t even want to investigate it, let alone visit or settle here is just fine by me.
