Canberra boycott threats shunt the Mr Rabbit's war drive.

The Age has a story on Tony Abbott’s efforts to raise Carbon Tax fears in Canberra (handy to Parliament for a photo op in a sitting week) hitting a snag (*boom *tish) when the Dickson butcher he was meant to be posing in started getting boycott threats:

‘This was a long pre-arranged visit but once a media alert went out the business in question received an aggressive phone call … I thought under all the circumstances it was best to change the venue because the last thing I would want to do is to cause needless grief to small business people,” Mr Abbott said.

The call was later revealed to be a threat of a boycott of the business if Mr Abbott visited.

Mr Abbott did not know where the phone call came from and later called the store to apologise for the inconvenience it may have caused.

The butcher later said: ”Mr Abbott is always welcome at this store.”

Canberra isn’t exactly friendly territory for Mr Abbott, but at least the Ainslie IGA owned by Liberal stalwart Manuel Xyrakis will stand by him (not least because Mr Xyrakis has done such a great job over many years, of being at the heart of his left leaning community)

I find these boycott threats pathetic and the perpetrators are no different to the Ditch the Witch / election now numpties we saw on the hill on Tuesday. In a democracy, we should not be threatening those who publicly support one particular side of politics, as with the GetUp threat to boycott Australian Food and Grocery Council members if they supported the Australian Trade and Industry Alliance campaign.

I’ve noticed quite a few street media stunts by both sides being performed in Canberra and Queanbeyan. Mr Rabbit was cutting up wood in Qbn a few weeks ago, from memory.

According to a news story I read yesterday, he does one every day whenever he’s in Canberra.
