Canberra cameraman shot in war zone

Thumper 2 July 2008 21

The Herald Sun is reporting that Canberra cameraman and former Army Reservist Jamie Kidston has been wounded in action in Afghanistan.

Kidston was shot through the arm while covering a battle between Canadian and Afghan forces and Taliban fighters near Kandahar in the south of the country.

The incident took place on the 18th of June.

Kidston, a former army reservist, is married with children and lives just outside Canberra.

Mael….Sorry, I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I never meant any member of the ADF being killed or wounded “observing” as being undeserving of “in-action”. I would actually put them in the combatant role because of what they were doing at the time.

I was just saying that I, and I think the AWM as well, does not include private contractors…such as journo’s, who get caught up in fighting, either by design or accident as killed in-action.

Don’t go there bigfeet.

Some of the ADFs more glorious moments were while we were just ‘observing’.

Lest we Forget, they were killed in action.

There are many war-correspondents who don’t just do it for the cash, or for the adrenalin rush (although also there are many who do) But the term “in-action” is normally reserved for actual combatants. Not observers/recorders, or civilian bystanders, but actually taking an active part.

Certainly the AWM does not recognise civilian or journo’s, as being killed “in-action”

I would put it the same as being killed/wounded “in-combat” and surely that would only relate to people actually combatting, not just observing

I’ll leave it to the posters who have seen active service.

I know what it entails. In fact I just recently signed on for a stint, much to the annoyance of my partner 😉

And their are some posters on this thread who have been on the two way firing range.

Having said that we need combat correspondents and I hope he recovers soon. Neil Davis and Damien Parer, brave, brave men…

“by my definition, the cameraman was not a combatant. he was wounded ‘in action’ as he was involved – ie as an active observer/recorder, so ‘in action’ – but not a combatant. is it that too hard a concept to grasp?”

So lets extrapolate. I twinged a hammy while in the action of having a dump this morning. Was I hurt ‘in action’.

‘In action’ in its context FFS. Oh my freakin’ hat. Definitely putting the ‘astro’ in your ‘nom de net’

no, mae, don’t ‘therefore’ me as if some fait accompli…

which is exactly what i have been saying since whenever the fruk i posted my comment, duh…

and belinda neal is an unwarranted member of the federal labour party if she persists in carrying on like a pork chop. stoopid cow, innit? which part of ‘complete’ doesn’t she understand? poor l’il currant…

Mr Evil I think i would rather face the Taliban than her. She looks scary.

Hasn’t another journalist been “wounded in action” today while trying to interview Belinda Neal? 😉

Mælinar Mælinar 3:50 pm 02 Jul 08

Therefore Astro – by your very explanation above, the cameraman was NOT wounded in action.

Which is exactly what VG and I have been saying since circa 11:30 this morning.

astrojax astrojax 3:42 pm 02 Jul 08

no, it still doesn’t countenance the media – which a ‘cameraman’ would be – and our need to have the war documented and somewhat transparent. media are not combatants.

Thanks vg 🙂

so all the innocent civilians killed or wounded ‘in action’ are therefore ‘combatants’ and have themselves to blame? or do you want all our wars to be fought outside the scrutiny of the media?

Action implies active involvement. Innocents are not killed ‘in action’. They have the conflict to blame, not themselves. If they were ‘in action’ they could partly blame themselves for their involvement causing the harm.

I didn’t think it was that hard a concept to grasp

In saying that, I still do hope he makes a full recovery and returns home safe and sound to his family!

tylersmayhem tylersmayhem 1:00 pm 02 Jul 08

Yep, I agree with VG. Journo who go to these war zones are not “heroes”. It either for self-prestige, money and/or “the rush”. I’m sure some of the time soldiers are jeopardised while protecting and looking after them etc etc.

I was lazy and stole the phrasing from the article.

Wounded in action implies that he’s a combatant.

vg vg 11:20 am 02 Jul 08

Sorry but I don’t have any sympathy for someone who knowingly takes themselves into a war zone for the purpose of financial gain then gets hurt.

He hasn’t been ‘wounded in action’. He’s not engaged in the action. He’s taking pictures

neanderthalsis neanderthalsis 11:12 am 02 Jul 08

I’d hate to be shot in the war zone, it would be most uncomfortable.

“For the past year Kidston has been employed by NATO in Kabul and was covering an operation led by Canadian soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force.

He is recovering in hospital in Kandahar and is in a stable condition.”

depends which side engaged him to do the filming.
