Canberra cameraman shot in war zone

By Thumper - 2 July 2008 21

The Herald Sun is reporting that Canberra cameraman and former Army Reservist Jamie Kidston has been wounded in action in Afghanistan.

Kidston was shot through the arm while covering a battle between Canadian and Afghan forces and Taliban fighters near Kandahar in the south of the country.

The incident took place on the 18th of June.

Kidston, a former army reservist, is married with children and lives just outside Canberra.

What’s Your opinion?

Mr Evil I think i would rather face the Taliban than her. She looks scary.

Hasn’t another journalist been “wounded in action” today while trying to interview Belinda Neal? 😉

Therefore Astro – by your very explanation above, the cameraman was NOT wounded in action.

Which is exactly what VG and I have been saying since circa 11:30 this morning.

astrojax 3:42 pm 02 Jul 08

no, it still doesn’t countenance the media – which a ‘cameraman’ would be – and our need to have the war documented and somewhat transparent. media are not combatants.

Thanks vg 🙂

so all the innocent civilians killed or wounded ‘in action’ are therefore ‘combatants’ and have themselves to blame? or do you want all our wars to be fought outside the scrutiny of the media?

Action implies active involvement. Innocents are not killed ‘in action’. They have the conflict to blame, not themselves. If they were ‘in action’ they could partly blame themselves for their involvement causing the harm.

I didn’t think it was that hard a concept to grasp

In saying that, I still do hope he makes a full recovery and returns home safe and sound to his family!

Yep, I agree with VG. Journo who go to these war zones are not “heroes”. It either for self-prestige, money and/or “the rush”. I’m sure some of the time soldiers are jeopardised while protecting and looking after them etc etc.

I was lazy and stole the phrasing from the article.

Wounded in action implies that he’s a combatant.

Sorry but I don’t have any sympathy for someone who knowingly takes themselves into a war zone for the purpose of financial gain then gets hurt.

He hasn’t been ‘wounded in action’. He’s not engaged in the action. He’s taking pictures

I’d hate to be shot in the war zone, it would be most uncomfortable.

“For the past year Kidston has been employed by NATO in Kabul and was covering an operation led by Canadian soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force.

He is recovering in hospital in Kandahar and is in a stable condition.”

S4anta 11:03 am 02 Jul 08

depends which side engaged him to do the filming.

Mælinar 11:01 am 02 Jul 08

Would that make him an illegal combatant ?
