Canberra’s most successful sporting team, the Canberra Capitals commence their season this weekend with a double road trip to Melbourne and then make their first home appearance on Friday October 10 against the Sydney Flames at the AIS Arena.

The team looks pretty good this year, with high profile recruits Marianna Tolo (from the AIS) and Michelle Musselwhite (Sydney) joining established stars Abby Bishop, Kellie Abrams, Natalie Hurst and Jessica Bibby in their pursuit of a 6th Championship in 9 years!

A promo is in place for the first game to celebrate retired Capitals legend Tully Bevilaqua winning a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics. Anyone who buys a ticket will receive another ticket of equal value courtesy of Tully. The “Tully’s Shout” promo is meant to encourage as many people as possible to join Tully on October 10 to celebrate her silver medal and welcome the 2008/09 Capitals players to the new season. The team is looking for 5000 screaming fans to get along to the game.

You can grab tickets through Ticketek or at the door, but get there early as there tends to be a fair line-up at the first game of the season. If you have any difficulties, contact Basketball Canberra.

The Capitals represent a great night out for the family – there aren’t too many high profile sporting teams that encourage all fans to come onto the playing surface after the game to meet the players, take photos, get autographs etc. And there aren’t too many better young female role models than this highly talented, yet surprisingly humble and down to earth group of gals.

Vote with your feet Canberra!

Game tips-off at 8pm, but best to get there a bit earlier to avoid the crowd.

I disagree about the “column inches” – I find the Canberra Times gives very generous coverage to Basketball, and to the Canberra Capitals in particular.

I went to my first Caps game at the end of last year. It was awesome, and highly recommended.

So tall and so untouchable…..

What time’s the kick off?

Thanks JB – might just take you up on the offer. Women’s sport tends to struggle for column inches in the papers compared to the boys, so anything that can be done to spread the gospel is a good thing!

If Darth or any other readers want to send in regular match reports (with pictures if possible but don’t let that stop you) we’d love to publish them.

i will be getting season tickets again this year. GO CAPS!
