Next month Canberra’s Sam Fogarty and his carer Nick Lucey will be taking part in the adventure trip of a lifetime – a trek across Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain.

Nest Advisory business owner and carer Nick Lucey said he decided to take part in the walk to help Sam raise funds to secure a room at Project Independence, Canberra’s home-grown social housing model. It provides a place for people with intellectual disabilities to grow their independence while living in a sustainable, safe and caring community.

“I’ve been a carer for Sam for the last 10 years and I am hoping to help him get a spot at Project Independence and support him along the way,” he said.

“I see him most Saturday mornings and obviously after 10 years, you become quite close with someone and their family. So yeah I’ve been quite involved as a carer, but also on a personal level on top of that.”

Sam said he decided to participate alongside his carer Nick to bolster the cause.

“I am walking Cradle Mountain to raise money so that people like me with an intellectual disability will get the chance to live in a safe and secure home with support,” he said.

Nick said he had an interest in helping people from a young age and that inspired him to become a carer – a job he has done for 15 years and counting.

He added that while he has participated in fundraising events before, he has never taken part in a fundraising trek.

“It’s fairly new to me because I’m not much of a hiker, so this would be a new experience,” he said.

“It would be good to sort of meet some new people, have a personal challenge and see some of the beautiful sights in Tasmania.”

Nick said he and Sam will leave on 19 April to walk up Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and return on 24 April.

“We have to walk about 10 km a day over the three days,” he said.

“Sam’s fundraising goal that we’re trying to achieve is about $7000 and we are close to half way at the moment.”
