Canberra Centre springs a leak

I was in the Canberra Centre at about lunch today when I discovered it had sprung a little leak.

And by little I mean alot, there was water dripping from the top floor, seemingly through the floor and onto the ground level around the david jones entry bit.

We spied the firies and a whole lot of panicked centre staff as they tried to prevent the water from flowing into all the other shops.

Anyone know what went wrong?

[ED – Thanks for this, I got the shot of the firies but not what brought them out]

Well this isn’t (this time) about letting the water in.

Fire sprinklers keep a standing column of water (so they work even if the water to the building is cut).

The bulbs that hold the water back are, however fragile by design (they need to burst when they get hot).

Whats with the way they build new structures these days. The brand new ATO building in the city had massive flooding just before or just after opening. You’d think for the money the developers get paid, they could at least get that right!

I just hope our water usuage doesn’t go beyond the daily target!!!

:-p

Does anybody know if David Jones is OK? I’m worried about him.

From what I’ve heard, Hot Dollar on the lower ground floor copped an awful lot of the water.

I had a good chuckle walking through at lunch time. Hot Dollar has only just reopened from renovations.. probably due to the last drenching it got. They should turn the Canberra Centre into a water theme park, it rains more inside than it does outside.

Did someone bung up the plughole with toilet paper and leave the tap running in the upstairs Gents?

This picture appears to have fallen victim to the “Numberplates are Sekret Bizness” meme.

Even, strangely, in the case of the giant lurid-safety-yellow truck with bright flashing lights. I’ve got a feeling I could recognise it even not knowing the numberplate.

It seems these giant lurid safety yellow trucks have also fallen victim to the google streetview lag. It’s picked the truck up on both sides of the street, I swear it’s the same one!

This is at least the 2nd time the centre has sprung a leak. Last time was about 4 months ago when the fire sprinklers in David Jones went off, flooding the lower ground food court and closing the centre for an afternoon.

It takes little effort, spares me grief, and doesn’t detract from the story.
