Tallaganda National Park is a tranquil forest environment that offers fabulous opportunities to enjoy bushwalking, mountain biking or four-wheel driving. You won’t find extensive facilities or even detailed signage, but you’re guaranteed plenty of opportunities to get back to nature. Fire trails criss-cross the park, so if you’re into bushwalking, mountain biking or four-wheel driving, you’ll find endless areas to explore. If you’re more into kicking back and taking in all that nature has to offer, throw a snag on the barbie, find a shady spot under a tree, and keep an eye out for the abundant birds and wildlife.

Tallaganda National Park covers thousands of hectares in an area of NSW around Canberra. It’s close to the city but once there, you’ll feel as though you’re a long way from civilisation, even though you’ll only be around 50km from the nation’s capital.

Why you’ll love it

If your idea of a perfect day trip includes getting away from it all, Tallaganda is the place to do it. The trails throughout the park are easy to access – just be sure you download maps before you go. Our favourite things to do in Tallaganda include:

Bushwalking

Bring your hiking shoes and explore the pristine and usually deserted trails on foot.

Mountain biking

If riding through native bush on spectacular fire trails is something you enjoy then definitely put Tallaganda on your to-do list.

Four-wheel driving

Pack your map, pick your route, and off you go. It’s a quiet park and you’ll often be the only vehicle on the trails.

Bird watching and wildlife spotting

Wombats, wallabies, quolls, owls and more than 55 species of birds call the park home. Watch out for pink and red robins and black cockatoos.

Pack a picnic

There are toilets, barbecues and picnic tables at the Mulloon Creek Campground.

Getting there

Tallaganda is a great spot for an easy day trip from Canberra. Take the Kings Highway through Queanbeyan and turn right at the roundabout onto Captains Flat Road. On the left after the Carwoola area, turn onto Briars-Sharrow Road, which will take you to Hoskinstown Road and through the village of Hoskinstown. Keep an eye out for Forbes Creek Road, which will get you to the National Park.

When to go

Tallaganda National Park is gorgeous in spring, when the surroundings bloom with colour and the birds are attracted to the wildflowers. Spring and autumn are the best times for outdoor activities like walks and rides, while the weather is milder.

In summer, it’s usually cooler in the park, and it becomes a pleasant shady oasis that’s the perfect setting for kicking back and relaxing.

What happened to Mulloon Creek Campground? Doesn’t resemble the grassy campground as depicted here and in other photos. It’s completely covered in chopped up trees and dirt.
