Canberra designer first to go

Canberra designer Tonie Sauers was the first contestant to be eliminated from Channel Nine’s new renovation show HomeMADE. She was in charge of renovating a living room but the furniture she chose was just too big for the small space and the colour scheme was frankly uninspired.

However just to show that judging design is hugely subjective, I loved the home made art that the judges hated, and hated the bright yellow nursery that the judges loved.

GnT, you’re so right. Annie did seem to only look out for herself (and hog tradies) rather than make any contribution to the rest of the house like she was supposed to. I didn’t even like what she came up with and think she’s another one who was very lucky to be “safe”.

I think the judges should have taken into consideration more than just the finished rooms. For example Annie (the nursery designer) at one stage said something like “Everyone wants me to help with their rooms but I’m trying to finish my room”. Excuse me, but your room was supposed to be finished two days ago! It seems if you hog the tradesmen’s time and more of the budget, you have more chance of winning. There should be more emphasis on teamwork.

I agree. I think the kitchen designer from the losing house thought she was on the way out but was super-relieved to not be. If I was planning on watching next week then I’d be watching to see how she goes with that close call in her mind.

Can’t say that I liked much of what any of them did, but then it’s what they can do in five days so it doesn’t give them alot of time to come up with something really original.

The designer of the unfinished kitchen was a bit luck i think, in fact both kitchens were a disgrace.

To be honest, I don’t know why neither the designer of the Baby’s Nursery nor the designer of the incomplete fake wood and lino kitchen went out first. Yes, Tonie’s living room was a little uninspiring but at least it was a room that could be used immediately and it wasn’t a room that would give my child nightmares.

Home Made showed promise at the start but lost me once all the designers were in the midst of all their chaotic “creating”. It was hard to keep track of who was working on what let alone which house they were in. The judging at the end really came down to their personal preference with the end result rather than the amount of effort the designer had gone to along with the degree of complexity their particular makeover required.

There is one designer that stands out for me – I think his name is Jason. He’s the one that did the master bedroom in the losing house from memory (the predominantly silver grey colour scheme). He’s never had any formal training and just decided to take up home decorating as a fallback to his international modelling career. I hope he goes a long way.

And in answer to your question GnT – no more Canberra designers; she was it.

I don’t think so.

There was one bloke in the Sydney audition who seemed to be hoping his unicycling distracted the judges from his cooking, but he was shown the door pretty quickly. For some reason, the judges weren’t impressed by his addition of sweet chilli sauce to a creamy pasta (I think that’s what he cooked)

The homemade art was a bit tragic. And the nursery was lovely for photos in a magazine, but I wouldn’t put a baby in a fluoro yellow room. They’d never sleep again.

Pity the Canberra connection is already gone. Are there any Canberrans on Masterchef?
