Canberra Economy Rocks OK?

Forget the doom and gloom that other sheep-like media spread around rather than think for themselves.

The Daily Telegraph has a deeply jealous story on how strong the local economy is in this city of smart, beautiful, and rich, rich, rich people.

    Canberra is bucking the economic trend, while the rest of Australia is hurting from the global downturn.

    Cashed-up public servants and highly-educated professionals are still splashing their disposable cash around on luxury items including expensive cars, jewellery and fine artwork.

These sorts of stories remind me of the Sixty Minutes expose’ (some years ago) about the luxurious life of the average Canberran. The street they used as a ‘typical’ Canberra stree was…yes you guessed it… Mugga Way, Red Hill.

Gotta laugh at these anti-Canberra stories.

I dunno – I was in the aps in the 90s when it was cut by 10% and it was not pretty.

On the other hand I bought a cheap house….

there hasn’t been such great doomsayer talk since the lead-up to Y2K!

Well yes, but whilst many (not all) Canberrans are luxuriating in the so called benefits of the global recession right now, lets not forget that Canberra is far (far) more suseptable to the economic impact of large-scale public service cuts than anywhere else in Australia. With the flick of his hard-working pen, Kevin07 can radically alter house-values, employment levels and overall living standards of the ACT population. Anybody who thinks this isn’t on the cards (especially after the big free-for-all give-aways to stimulate the economy) is kidding themselves. Make hay while the sun shines people, because I predict that it won’t be sunny here for too much longer.

So far the global economic crisis has given me:
– Several interest rate cuts resulting in significantly lower mortgage payments;
– Lower petrol prices;
– Lower inflation, resulting in lower prices all around;
– Small business dying for my patronage, and offering all sorts of discounts and deals.

If this is what a recession looks like, bring it on!

But think of all the unemployed, lesbian, disabled, single-parent, mothers who may not be having it as easy as you are!

These interest rate cuts have been fantastic. Mid year I reckon I’ll lock in for at least 5 years.

I must admit things have kind of gotten easier for us with the recession also, except for being unemployed.

So you’ve got a few bob, want us to buy your solar cells and are prepared to mock anyone who wants to point out what a fraud you are.

When I first came to Canberra, I could not believe how expensive it was to live here, the prices are much higher than Sydney, at least Sydney has competiton, their isn’t here.

Plain fact is that this town is full of extremely well paid people even if lacking the real wealth of some in other capital cities. And a large swag of these well paid people don’t seem to accept that there are a lot of us struggling. So they don’t give a damn that stupid schemes like PV electricity or hikes in water bills add a few dollars to utility bills because to them its small change. And true to their hypocrisy they continue to vote Labor and Labor is happy to buy their votes. Stuff the rest of us.

You’ve got to feel for Passy….trying to inspire working class revolution amid all this conspicuous consumption!

Failing that, we settle for “ritzy Yarralumla”.

I heard there was a friendly little European nation that was moving its embassy from O’Malley to Charnwood to save on costs… “I live in a former embassy” has a nice ring to it!

Bad news, for mine.

The clear inference is that the taxpayer is paying for all the cars, jewellery, artworks etc.

More bottom-feeding from Australia’s worst media outlet.

Ho-hum.

So looks like we still have a good round of Canberra bashing from the usual suspects (I’d mention Miranda, Andy and Piers but that probably invokes Godwin’s law). I wonder if the tabloids run these sorts of stories just so their opinion makers can take a swing.

Did the fact that when everyone else is booming, Government tends to be isolated from that as well.

I’m also betting they don’t point out how comparatively expensive it is to live here.

So I guess I’ll just go and hop in my Merc and buy some expensive art work, like all the other posters/lurkers here, after all we all live in Forrest don’t we.

so in the good times canberra is dissed for being dull and boring, and canberrans bombarded with taunts of ‘how could you stand to live there’ – and then in the hard times , the rest of australia suddenly realises the truth – the smart cultured rich people live in canberra where the good times never stop, they keep rolling. is this an appropriate time to do the echoing self-satisfied evil laugh?

Hoo boy, it doesn’t take them long, does it? This sounds very much like the stories during the last recession about Canberra being “the recession-free zone”, and which culminated in the infamous Richard Carleton story on 60 Minutes. The aim, of course is to generate resentment against so-called privileged fat cats and shiny bums.

Anything that upsets Terrorgraph readers must be a good thing, right?

Well durr, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I’m more worried about Mr Rudd waking up after a nightmare than I am about the credit crunch.

A nightmare could mean PS funding slashed.
