Canberra fans deal blow to Panthers Players

Not only did the Canberra Raiders subject the Penrith Pathers to a narrow defeat at Canberra Stadium on Saturday, but reports are now filtering out about Canberra fans racially abusing Panthers players. Reports indicate that a couple of xenophobic Raiders fans were using some pretty strong language, and the NRL has issued a warning to Canberra over crowd control measures.

So should the Raiders be taking the heat for the foul mouths of these racist fans? Or should Canberra Stadium management, security, or the Police at the grounds take responsibility?

If fans are misbehaving this badly, what should the punishment be (after we cut out their tongues)?

Finally, if the abusive Raiders “fans” happen to read this, next time show how big you are: Run onto the field and say it to their faces.

I just re-read that headline after reading the drugs in prison story – the image of Raiders fans selling cocaine to Panthers players came to mind. (I guess it would work better if it was the West Coast Eagles)

The jelly bean thing by the poms was infintile.

As in infinitely childish or childishly infinite?

If you’re going to sledge, do it with style – next time we play Penrith throw chocolates onto the ground as they run on (I kinda liked the example set by the English cricketers that threw jelly beans onto the pitch).

“if it’s anything like the kind of meassage that footballers send about drug taking, wife beating, drink driving, fraud, and thuggery”

Like, hey, the rest of the community at large!”

Thumpers right on the money. Its not just footballers – but they are easy to highlight as celebrity sells papers – see the constant reporting of the latest adventures of the Hollywood skanks Hilton, Lohan, Ritchie and others…

But if the front page of the Canberra Times was Bob the Builder from Bruce who sipped ten schooners with his mates after work, drove home tanked then slapped the missus for not cooking his dinner, it would not sell a single newspaper… Turn that into a high profile footballers, and its another 1000 copies sold!

This reminds me of an old joke. Apologies in advance.

A sports teacher asks a girl in his class what NRL team she supports. The girl says that she supports the Roosters. The teacher asks why. She says that she follows the Roosters because her mum and dad are Roosters supporters. The Sports teacher is incredulous “That’s no reason to support a rugby league team!” he exclaims. “On that logic what would you be if your father was a street pimp and your mother was a crack whore?” he asks. The girl thinks about it for a bit and says “Well I suppose I’d be a Bulldogs supporter”.

“No-one can really be expected to take responsibility for the cretinous rantings of their fans but it would be nice for the players to send a message that such antics aren’t acceptable.”

if it’s anything like the kind of meassage that footballers send about drug taking, wife beating, drink driving, fraud, and thuggery – well no thanks, I’d rather they didn’t say/do anything at all. 🙂

No-one can really be expected to take responsibility for the cretinous rantings of their fans but it would be nice for the players to send a message that such antics aren’t acceptable.

What a couple of floggers. It’s always fun to heckle the other team and make fun of them, but to turn it into a race thing is retarded, it’s just football. I would have sent a few 50c pieces flying into the backs of their heads, parramatta eels style, if I heard that garbage at the stadium.

this is why I am against supporting particular teams in sport – the parochialism can cause so many problems and simple minded people get far too passionate. Most the time when I watch sport I mostly want to see a good game and at the end of the day who cares who wins it doesn’t exactly matter. And if you get to see a good game then you can’t be disappointed if ‘your’ team doesn’t win.

“”So should the Raiders be taking the heat Or should Canberra Stadium management, security, or the Police at the grounds take responsibility?””

Why the Raiders? They can’t give all their fans an IQ test? Stadium Mismanagement and Security are a joke but the Police are at liberty to arrest anyone anytime if they have reasonable suspicion a crime has been committed so leave it to the Cops.

I sat near the Raiders army, and near the bunch of travelling Penriff supporters. I can assure you the only intoxicated, abusive, homophobic and racist bile being sprayed was from the delinquents wearing liquorice all sorts jumpers – and family groups moved away in a hurry.

The Raiders Army sung songs, took the piss out of the Centrelink recipients, and handled themselves well – the Penriff fans were a disgrace and were eventually shut up by the score line…
