Hi there – I came across a great article on Canberra on the popular national website www.mammamia.com.au and after reading the comments I have to say – pretty uplifting.

Fifteen years ago you couldn’t get many people to stand up and declare they loved this place, now it seems everyone is finally appreciating what we have here. Yay! Warm fuzzies!

staminaman – it wasn’t so much the original post I had warm feelings about (yeah, sponsored posts generally write it up) but the response from other commentators on the Mamamia forum…that was I thought was interesting and pretty nice actually.

The whole site is so fatuous, in my opinion, that it needs a new word to describe it, but as it instantly ate my brain I can’t come up with one just now. It reminds me of a mothers’ group I was in (for about five eternal minutes) where hideous tales about childbirth were combined with passive-aggressive stories of how truly ‘hopeless’ hubby was, and where competitive comparisons of babies’ tendencies towards Nobel prizes were made based on whose child gurgled along to Mozart first (a composer who, I would suggest, none of the mothers had listened to before buying the Baby Genius tape). Anything outside the domestic sphere was taboo.

At the top of every page the site says New, Views, Shoes. I mean excuse me while I puke.

As #1 said, the post you’re commending is an advertisement. And your first link doesn’t work.

Sorry about the first link Poetix – http://www.mamamia.com.au

I believe the word you were looking for was ‘curmudgeon’.

Oh, wait, that was the word I was looking for after reading that rant.

Missues Jethro and I found parents group to be really useful and nothing at all like your description.

Like many Canberrans we don’t have a huge amount of family here. Parents group gave us a support network. The horror of things, I know.

Now, Now, settle down ladies we’re all friends here. No need to be so bitchy.

OK, who wants another latte? And does little Jimmy want another Babycino?

That should be ‘Jymaeh’, not ‘Jimmy’……

But instead of being raging bitches about it …

I dunno, your post did a pretty good impression of one.

You make a fair point. On further consdieration I should have found a way to make my point without the sarcasm…and without using the word bitch.

Good god Poetix, a mother’s group where house-bound mothers meet to vent and talk about their children? Women who think their bratty babies are amazing? Outrageous! I’ve never heard of such madness!

Your colossal brain must have been throbbing inside your skull, knowledge bursting out of your ears as you tried to dumb your conversation down to their level. Where is the deeply intelligent and sparkling repartee in which you engage (constantly) on Riot Act?

You must be the first parent ever to have gone to a mothers group and found it not to her liking!

Oh wait, actually, you’re not. Lots of us don’t like mother’s groups for the many reasons you’ve stated. But instead of being raging bitches about it and putting the mothers down on an internet forum we engage as much as we can and then don’t go back. Simple, really.

Far out, are you having a bad day or what?

Hahahaha! Only Canberra people could bitch about negative things said about Canberra AND positive things said about Canberra! Or in this case, relate it to issues that are universal – worldwide! Glass half empty much?? 😉

Personally, I think raging bitches have nothing to lose but their brains. But Mr Poetix thinks that you make some reasonable points.

Isn’t the site owner someone called Mia Freedman? Is she the Sydneysider who set foot in Canberra for a few moments a few years ago as the paid “face of Floriade”? So she’s still milking us!

I took the article with a grain of salt once I noticed it was “sponsored by ACT tourism.”
