canberra flood 1955

Aussielyn has sent this one in with this note:

Included is an image of Canberra Flood 1955 sourced from Alan Foskett, looking north east.

On the left hand side is the oval shaped racetrack and the American Memorial at Russell is at back.

The racetrack was for horse races and was also part of the old Federal Golf Course before it was moved to Red HIll. Both are now under water. A road ran from Liversidge street down the side of the racecourse to the three houses at Springbank and all that’s left of them is Springbank Island. Just above the racecourse is the original Canberra Hospital where I was borne in Balmain Cres, now part of the ANU. Under the water in the foreground is the old Royal Canberra Golf course and I think the solitary buildings in the foreground is the old Westlake workers settlement. The pic was taken one year after the NCDC was formed and Alan was one of it’s first employees.

When I have time I’ll pull out one of the old digitized maps and newspapers from Trove for y’all.

Under LBG.

A quick google implied the race track is part of where Acton is now. I cant visualise it in my head though.

*Perhaps* its taken from Black mountain looking East, the hill in the background is general bridges drive (near RMC?)

Gee, I wasn’t aware that climate change started that far back.

Top half and too the left of the fold mark down the middle of the photo. There’s a bit of a white smudge or ‘glow’ at the top of the eagle

Nup… can’t find any reference point…

Can anyone point out the eagle?
