Flood at Duntroon

Aussielyn has sent in these photos from the Chipperfield Collection with the following short note:

This flood destroyed the rail bridge over the Molonglo River and the rail link to Civic, in a siding at Garema Place.

More below the fold.

Thanks for the NLA map, the Reservoir is still there between Russell Offices & ADFA.
The map also shows Scott’s crossing that Chip used to drove stock over when he was a teen. The Causeway kids used the broken bridge over the Molonglo as a diving platform.

He said the houses in the flood photo, near the river, were stables and workshops. This area is now Heritage Cl, Patterson Hall & Duntroon Facilities, I assume. The Boathouse location is further west, to the right of the photo.

Canberra Historian Ann Gugler said, re haircut, that the Sewer Camp No 1 was on the Curtin side of the Cotter Road near the RSPCA turnoff

Shame they never rebuilt that rail line into civic…

The first photo is takenf rom the top of the hill nehind russell/ADFA. It is overlooking wherer the boathouse is now. Bearing in mind that the river mouth flood plain has been hacked away a bit and is now under a little more than in the piccy.

I think the area in that photo might be more towards Duntroon RMC and the grazing land adjacent Jerrabomberra wetlands. Sorry to be a pedant, but the general shape of the land and the fact that the umbra suggests an easterly view convinces me. Cheers.

LazyI: At a guess, the first one is maybe from the (modern) southern apex of General Bridges Rd on Russell Hill looking southeast-ish?

For the other one, you might need to investigate.

It would be great if that top photo could be professionally restored.

Anyone able to locate/geotag the first 2 photos? would be interesting to add the historic photos to a map 😀

Is there a larger version of the third image?
