Saw this tweet from Commander Hadfield up in the International Space Station.

Canberra, capital of Australia. If you zoom in you can see the circle around Parliament House. pic.twitter.com/p7V6GOKU

I can’t see the road he’s talking about, but I located LBG.

I had written it off as a photography opportunity due to the wind, but decided at the last moment to have a crack at it. So it was rushed and I missed the best framing of the ISS passing Orion. Still, both shots came out reasonably, given the brightness of the moon: http://alankerlin.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/photos-from-tonights-very-bright-iss.html

I wonder if NearMap changed for security and privacy reasons. The level of detail available was a concern if you work or live somewhere with security issues.

I really miss NearMap too. I get that it’s their data and they have every right to charge for it. Surely though, they could make a bit of money by having a very cheap individual subscription with limited data download or something.

Cool photo all the same, I always find recent images to be very interesting. It was a sad day when nearmap put up a paywall.

Shocking, imagine the cheek of a private enterprise trying to make a return on their not insignificant investment in aerial photography.

I don’t begrudge Nearmaps in the slightest for wanting to make some money. I am just sad that I no longer have the opportunity to browse their high quality product purely for entertainment purposes. Just ’cause I’m sad something happened doesn’t mean I’m complaining about it.

@Cmdr_Hadfield Beam me up Cmdr. There’s no intelligent life form down here…

Huh. I put a whole bunch of spaces in to align the table. WordPress just stripped them all out again…

Speaking of the ISS – two great passes at reasonable times: tonight and tomorrow (latter being the brighter).

Date Brightness Start Highest point End
[Mag] Time Alt. Az. Time Alt. Az. Time Alt. Az.
23 Jan -2.3 22:13:25 10° WSW 22:16:28 38° NW 22:16:28 38° NW
24 Jan -3.3 21:22:58 10° SW 21:26:21 81° NW 21:28:11 25° NE

I hope the table lines up OK…

Although the Canberra photo isn’t up there yet, Chris is posting some of his photos here: http://colchrishadfield.tumblr.com/

Very cool. A higher res version would be nice.

Lake George is looking quite full there, right up to its northern edge almost.

I know exactly where parliment house it, but find the resolution of the photo a little low to really make it out.

Rotate the image 90deg anti-clockwise and you can (makes the orientation much more familiar).

Fascinating.

I always find looking at maps or satellite images of the city on anything but a North/South orientation really disorienting and odd.
