Member for Canberra Gai Brodtman and Minister for Transport Anthony Albanese have announced money for local road black spots:

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese and Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann today announced the Rudd Labor Government will provide $596,500 to fix six dangerous black spots on local roads.

The six black spots and the proposed treatments are:

Carruthers Street and Yarra Glen off-ramps (west) at Curtin: $180,000 to improve the operation of traffic signals and upgrade barriers;

Yamba Drive and Julia Flynn Crescent (north) at Isaacs: $95,000 to improve channelisation in the median and install new kerbing;

Jerrabomberra Avenue, Captain Cook Crescent and Sturt Avenue at Narrabundah: $45,000 to reduce Jerrabomberra Avenue (northbound) to one lane;

Drakeford Drive and Barr-Smith Avenue at Bonython: $26,000 to improve minor deficiencies such as signage, linemarking and vegetation clearance; and

Being local to the area, I know those two intersection on Drakeford can be prang-magnets… but I really don’t see how any of those three treatments will achieve anything. I’m not even sure there is any vegetation at the Noorooma intersection! Certainly none that has ever blocked my view.

Ditto the Noorooma / Drakeford / Barr-Smith intersections. A total of $50k allocated for a problem that does not exist. I will have tomato sauce on my bacon sandwich, thanks.

Can I make a complaint about how much all these road users are costing us and why dont they just buy a bike?

Because some of us want to get to our destination in a reasonable amount of time, and not burden the public with the sight of lycra clad, unfit ‘wanna-be’ cyclists.

Can I make a complaint about how much all these road users are costing us and why dont they just buy a bike?

The Black Spots program is based on eligibility- so not an example of ‘pork’.

Yes sure, this highly unusual announcement weeks before an election is normal process.

And I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Pork indeed – and focused on the less left-leaning, more southern burbs.

I rasherly assumed this was about a roadside bacon vendor.

But then there would be a review, a photo, and about ten million comments.

with apologies to SCT and poetix

In Canberra did RiotAct
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where roadside bacon vendors, ran
Through blackspots measureless to man
Down to public art of the bourgeoisie

Please please – much more interesting than pollies trying to win elections with roads. Can someone do this? Imagine the spluttering of fatted critics.

I read the headline and thought we were getting more makred police presence on our roads.

this list just proves southsiders can’t drive… 🙂

[cough, *splutter*] why you, now see here, I just, I mean, well [clears throat]

Oh, it’s a fair point I s’pose. “I, for one, welcome our new perfectly-competent-at-driving northside overlords”.

one is so glad to be acknowledged… now, carry on.

Road pork… hehehe

Yeah that’s a barrelling good laugh!

As someone with a more than passing familiarity with the Black Spots program, I found mezza76’s comment fairly amusing. Eligibility, schmeligibility. It’s a program particularly loved by our rural politicians. Pass me a bacon sandwich.

They need to fix up the intersection of Clift crescent and Ashley drive. There has been two smashes involving 3 or more cars in the last 4-6 weeks, not to mention a number of minor prangs as well.

And the sites are all in her electorate. When is Andrew Leigh making his announcement?

AAAARGH for the love of god people, since we went metric in 1974 speed is expressed as km/h NOT kph!

Reduce the speed on Melrose Drive from 70 to 60? What kind of narrow minded numpty came up with this idea? As it stands this section of Melrose is a doddle along anyway. If anything it should be 80. The only time I see people doing 70 is on pension pay day. Seriously though, this intersection is only a “black spot” because they have gone and stuck a “Form One Lane” right as you approach the intersection, then they have the stupid lane on the right that is a turning lane for the next intersection at Hindmarsh. If they actually put in a normal, uncomplicated intersection to begin with they wouldn’t have these issues.

While they continue to black tar they will always have black spots. Paint the roads white and all will be fixed. Even climate change will be fixed, just imagine how much heat will be reflected back into space!

Dude! I love your thinking.

I’m confused.

Why are they paying money to reduce the number of lanes on Jerrabomberra Avenue?

To increase safety. Though do note they are NOT reducing the lanes on the whole road just at this intersection.

My bet is what they will do is make Jerrabomberra Ave left lane past the college left turn only, one lane through the intersection onto Sturt St and then give Captain Cook Ave turning left onto Sturt St the left lane. They have already done something similar at the same intersection but going the other way.

There is absolutely no need to reduce Jerrabomberra Ave(northbound) to one lane FFS!!

No doubt it is related to the lights and having schools either side. That intersection, with three lanes directly outside the school and pedestrian lights right where people are turning across two lanes of traffic onto Jerrabomberra, is rife with hazards.
It’ll be a pain for drivers, but I doubt drivers are the people in the minds of those seeking to make these changes.

There is absolutely no need to reduce Jerrabomberra Ave(northbound) to one lane FFS!!

I didn’t say the announcement wasn’t well timed – just that the program isn’t pork. There’s a big difference between discretionary v eligibility programs… I’d explain it to you – but I’d need PowerPoint, a whiteboard and maybe some stick figures.

I’m confused.

Why are they paying money to reduce the number of lanes on Jerrabomberra Avenue?

I’d be happy if someone would just sweep all the gravel off Stretton Crescent in Latham so I don’t go sliding on my bike.

So the feds are chipping in for the neglected south?
