Canberra gliding

By johnboy - 16 July 2008 6

And now for some video.

Today we’ve got some very cool footage of hang and para gliding around Canberra from Spring Hill, Lanyon, Lake George, Pig Hill, Grenfell and Binalong. (Even if the music in the first half was… questionable)

If you’re interested the footage comes from thebombout.com

What’s Your opinion?

I’m a relative newcomer to the occupation of hang gliding and I think we have all dreamt about flying since we were children, but fear stops us. Fear limits our lives.

Hang gliding is something I would not regard as being in the ‘dangerous’ category (as opposed to paragliding and motor cycle riding!) unless you are into playing with death. It takes a week of your life to learn to fly, and for most people it is a life-changing experience. You don’t have to be strong, brave or stupid… and we are ALL afraid of heights.

Since learning to fly, I can no longer see the world in the same way as before. Here is a link to a video that captures the essence of free flying for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ODE8DxCUFA

Yes, yes… Sorry about the music guys. I certainly wasn’t expecting mainstream coverage of this modest little clip.

RuffnReady,
Canberra has an awesome Hang Gliding scene and some of the best conditions in Australia. In the past few seasons there have been many flights that start locally and end in some far away place after heading cross country. Some of the more memorable ones have seen us land in Gundagai, Cootamundra, Marulan and Kiama.

Hang gliding, in order to be done safely, takes up a lot of time and requires commitment to stay current. If you have this time and inclination the rewards are far greater than I can ever hope to describe here.

Sharing a thermal with a friendly wedge tailed eagle as you climb out to ten thousand feet to meet up with your friends at cloud base before fanning out as you head off on glide. This is what it’s all about.

Either this image grabs you straight away and you will be searching the net for the next week looking for all things hang gliding, or alternatively, it sounds cool but you feel there is something stopping you. If you think you fit into the first category give me a call or drop me an email and we can get the ball rolling. My details have already been linked to in the article.

Cheers,
Trent

I was pretty sure that hang and para gliding was banned in lanyon because of the two accidents that happened a few years ago which destroyed two seperate houses.

Ask them I’d guess.

Awesome! How can I learn to do this?

“Questionable” is generous. “Music” is even a stretch, and I like electronic music.
