Canberra Goss gives up on Canberra? Things to do for New Years.

Four days later and we’re still waiting for Canberra Goss’s Foreshore reportage.

Even so we were astonished to read the girls have written off Canberra for New Years’ completely!

There’s no better reason to party than the birth of a brand new year. So pull out your party gear and head to one of these top spots around Australia to celebrate the end of 2008. Canberra Goss has been doing some investigating and Canberra is not holding much on! Also, with showers expected on NYE it might be a wise idea to move on out for new years!

They proceed to offer a comprehensive list of parties in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Anyone else feel certain enough of the weather forecast a month out to leave town?

Also, while we’re here, any suggestion for things to do in Canberra on the biggest night of the year?

Hmm, over my head ant. But I think we agree…

So it’s incumbent on us to go and pollute their site with tales of fake paddock parties.

agreed, my point is that they shouldn’t rely on readers to provide content. They should get off their backsides and find it themselves. That’s why people are going to the site isn’t it? To find out what’s on. And I don’t mean parties, I mean what Canberra business is offering. Heaps of places have specials on for NYE but they don’t advertise it widely (or it’s too hard to find). This site could do a bit of leg work and centralise the packages on offer. Lots of scope later on, but they can’t have a page with NYE events on in other cities! There are dozens of those already. Useless for us in Canberra.

Well, if they want people to provide their content, you could have a lot of fun talking aobut some party that’s on NYE, killer music etc, and it turns out to be an empty paddock.

I got all excited when I first clicked on the site…. but it was short lived. CG, I like the homepage – but that’s about all. Try asking what your readers want and you might get a bit of a following (and not the current bores on there).

Go around to all the restaurants and ask them what they’re planning, then post the menus/packages online. Then work your way around to the pubs/clubs to see what they’re putting on. There will be more than enough going on to fill the page – but don’t rely on everyone else to do the work. Ie, have a blank page then ask RA to fill it for you.

Great idea – poor execution. But don’t give up!

A good Canberra ‘what’s on’ site would complement RA really well. But after reading the site (was that orange text on a black background?!), I know where I’ll be going (staying) for my Canberra commentary…. 🙂

My two cents – take it or leave it.

GC, you got photos of you that I can look at?

They sure do.
Jb can probably share the link I sent him t’other day.
Or email jessie@canberragoss.com and ask for some non-academy branded photos.

There hasn’t been anything decent on in Canberra on NYE for years, besides the government’s crummy idea of entertainment. Fireworks provide 10 mins of entertainment, better off finding something to do somewhere else for the rest of the night.

Why are you expecting a review of Foreshore from them, JB? The fact that those people even attended says everything about their critical faculties as far as music is concerned.

I was curious to see what could be achieved by taking the inside running.

Very little it seems.

Yeah but how many will stay? or contribute?

Fair point, but considering the cost was only a little bit of time, it’s a return for zero investment.

I have little doubt CG will visit RA (whether they contribute or not) just as much as JB seems to visit CG.

I made some posts, but I am not sure that you would consider them contributing.

Actually, I think that riotact gets a fair few of its regulars from the host of people that first come here to read slander written about themselves on the site (like me, for instance). So maybe Canberra Dross will end up being regulars?

Yeah but how many will stay? or contribute?

For all we know it could be an interesting marketing exercise by Canberra Goss to get some visitors for free.

How many people had never heard of the site before now, and how many people have now taken a look at it just because of this thread?

You’re quite right, Cameron, it’s shocking! Terrible! We all suck.

If anonymous internet piss taking is your idea of entertainment, good luck to you. I always thought it was a coping mechanism for those who miss the days of doing it to someone’s face in primary school.

Don’t get me wrong – the odd piss take has its place, but the usual signs of over the top were starting to appear in this thread. People getting stuck into CG for being relatively good natured about it all and *gasp* posting in the thread. How dare they try and give RA ‘contributors’ some understanding of where they’re coming from (as ill-informed and underprepared as that might be).

Because it is fun?

Why bother?

Why can’t we poke fun at them?

Some of those pills take several days to wear off…

I gotta get me some of *that* action!

Skidbladnir said :

True, but they should probably disclose or at leats be upfront about who they’re fronting for.

Absolutely. I think though that most people who care enough about that sort of thing are smart enough to realise it themselves.

CG’s target market is obviously 18-21 year olds who consider getting blind in civic fun, markedly different from RA’s posting demographic.

True, but they should probably disclose or at leats be upfront about who they’re fronting for. Several comments from different posters on the topic get deleted from teh site in a hurry.

Apparently the CG people think 18-21 is still too young to make _informed_ choices about what to do clubwise and where to buy booze.

Showers are expected for New Years Eve?
The weather boffins can hardly get predictions right for a day or two in future.
If you’re part of the local media, I demand sources!

“Still recovering” after four days is just so soft as to be useless.

Some of those pills take several days to wear off…

“House party” is to ensure people realise that it’s not a Paddock Party, Stormwater Drain Party or Fake Party…..

Actually, I have been to a party in a storm water drain, but I don’t think that the invitation specifically called it that. In fact I think it just referred to it as a birthday party.

CG’s target market is obviously 18-21 year olds who consider getting blind in civic fun, markedly different from RA’s posting demographic. It’s hardly surprising that RA users think it’s a waste of time.

Every right to criticise, sure – but why bother criticising something for promoting something that you’re simply not interested in and doing it in a manner that will likely work for the people who ARE interested? Why bother taking the piss out of the person responsible for what you’re criticising for responding to the criticism?

Given the rubbish reactions people have had to any form of criticism on RA (see flame of the week), CG has actually handled themselves better than I would have expected.

Tonka – like the fight club reference.

Ooh! I have it – perhaps that “concentrated vapidity” is enough to create as low pressure system whenever they congregate, thus ensuring they know what the weather will be like in advance.

C’mon people, the hint is right there in the name – “Canberra Goss”. If you’re a gossipy tween, you’d be right at home. It’s not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean it deserves universal derision. It’s certainly not my cup of tea, the concentrated vapidness (er… oxymoron aside) turns me right off.

I’ll hopefully be spending NYE much in the same manner as Dante. In fact, knowing how previous NYE’s have ended up, I wouldn’t be surprised if I bump into him at some point during the evening. 🙂

Canberra Goss is so bad that I have ended up going to the Bureau of Met’s website to find out what’s really going on in Canberra.

I am Jack’s complete lack of interest.

Canberra Goss = shit.

plain

and

simple.

We’ve got every right to criticise it being Canberran’s and it having the name of our home town attached to it. You want petty? GO and take a look at some of it’s content, I just did and I feel substantially dumber because of it…

It’s not a competitor by any means. It’s not even in the novelty events.

There is usually always a bucketload of people in Civic on the big night (so much so that I never go). I imagine plenty of clubs will be going nuts – though it is fair to say they’ll have large cover charges.

eyeLikeCarrots1:10 pm 03 Dec 08

I’m just hoping for some advice on where I can meet some new people and party with NYE…

Canberra has proven a hard crowd to break into so far..

(or she, sorry)

Exactly where did he say so, H1NGO?

Everybody stop because Tracker said so!

I can’t believe how many people have bothered to comment on this.

FFS – this is a total non-issue – who the hell cares?

Sometimes this site gets a bit old. The info on Canberra events and user-created news is awesome, and why I have riotact bookmarked, but seriously, I wish there were less threads like this one.

Having a dig at a website that is a potential ‘competitor’ is just petty, and then having a go at whoever runs it for defending it is just silly.

I too, take issue with a site purporting to be an independent voice actually being the marketing exercise of a Canberra club. I also think it is a little ridiculous for them to be promoting parties outside of Canberra for NYE. (Canberra Goss – as someone else suggested, sounds like a perfect opportunity for you to organise your own thing). I think it is stupid for a Canberra-based site not to use Canberra based-businesses, but RA can be as guilty of that as the next person.

All of that said, who cares? RiotACT already specialises in taking the piss out of every second poster, do we need to do the same thing for every second website (inconsequential or otherwise) out there?

If Canberra Goss choose to participate in RiotACT then let them. Plenty of other people use it to learn more about the Canberra scene, and it is always useful to engage and interact with people in our community. Take Kieran from Adventure Paintball for example – RA is for him as much as a marketing tool as it is a way to keep in touch with his customer base and see what’s going on in the community in which he runs a business.

I think the big issue is also their approach. They come in yelling and screaming about the next big thing for Canberra and blah blah blah. But the website is launched with no real content or members.

You don’t develop an interesting user generated content site over night and it was silly for the to expect people to just flock over there and start posting Articles for them. Sites like riot act take a long time to develop a users base. If they had just started the site with a little targeted advertising and a constant approach to develop a base readership then i think they probably would have copped a lot less criticism.

JB – I find the schadenfreude enjoyed by yourself and others in relation to the potentially decent Canberra Goss website to be poor form.

Potential for what? Finding a great tan!

“House party” is to ensure people realise that it’s not a Paddock Party, Stormwater Drain Party or Fake Party which is really just a venue being sneaky Party.

If I held ill-will to them I wouldn’t refer to them at all.

I’m actually hoping they get their act together.

“Still recovering” after four days is just so soft as to be useless.

>While I agree total with this approach, I have always wondered about the expression “house party”. Isn’t a normal party at someone’s house? Why do people fell it necessary to include the redundant word?

Party’s can be any where you want them a house party is at a house.

>JB – I find the schadenfreude enjoyed by yourself and others in relation to the potentially decent Canberra Goss website to be poor form.

Honestly i have no problem with another Canberra blog. Actually i would love to find another good one. But really Canberra Goss is pretty lame and has some pretty degrading posts about women ( did you see a rate Canberra’s hunkiest guy). I’m not one to judge with out evidence that is why i did not say any thing until the site actually had some content(if you can call it that).

I don’t mind if another website opens up, they’re not a competitor, nor are they going to hold my interest. Thats fine, I don’t expect them to, nor do I expect every tv show that goes to air to appeal to me.
Its probably going to appeal to someone.

But Canberragoss is currently the equivalent of those BioMagnetics infomercials, except for Academy.
At least the BioMagnetics people disclose that they are trying to sell a product (and produce their own content).

NYE this year is going to be all about great house party’s in suburbia for me this year.

While I agree total with this approach, I have always wondered about the expression “house party”. Isn’t a normal party at someone’s house? Why do people fell it necessary to include the redundant word?

Everyone knows the best NYE parties are at homes anyway. Isn’t it the youth thing to crash parties these days? Check out facebook for locations!

hahaha, have a read of some of the comments too. Good for a laugh.
Just as i thought a small group of people posting their personal grudges about who has the most fully sick car in Canberra and who is the most hardcorest(sic) no real info and not much about Canberra really.

JB – I find the schadenfreude enjoyed by yourself and others in relation to the potentially decent Canberra Goss website to be poor form.

I’m guessing the Canberra Goss gals are building this site as a hobby, not as a full-time job. You get paid a salary to edit/moderate RiotAct but few people running blog sites have the same privelege.

For a moderator to instigate hatred against a rival website smacks of sour grapes.

– Luv Duke

The site itself I have no problem with, except for the fact they’re using Syra.com.au for hosting arrangements, when there are local options.

Its the content on offer, and failure to disclose interests, in order to maintain the hype.

I just checked out the Canberra Goss website and I am appalled by the language that is used in there.. With topics of conversation about who has the “Shittest Canberra car” and “Who’s the hottest Canberra girl? You decide!” Canberra Goss is sure to be nominated for the NPC – 2009 Golden Gong Award!

I know this, because I saw it.
But its still for Academy’s shill girls and their ‘pals’.

Hanging around at Academy (big suprise on the location), organised by people who are claiming to be independent by hyping Academy, and getting them to pave the way…
No thanks.

I’ll still lend my custom elsewhere, and avoid you and your gang as if you were bleeding from your eyes.

Must be a slow news day over at CG too (sorry, Cg); the operator’s contributed seven of the 22 comments to date on this thread!

>I would suggest that with Summernats being held then they’re bang on the money.

NYE this year is going to be all about great house party’s in suburbia for me this year. Actually from what i gather and have experienced, that is usually the norm for most Canberra ‘youths’ and is probably going to be a hell of a lot more desirable with the Summernats going on.

That website just looks like a inconsequential social website for young Berrans, I’m not sure why you keep sledging them. It’s not like they’ll be stealing visitors away from this site, it’s a totally different demographic. Anyway, they’ve just got started, you should be encouraging them, not having a go over this petty stuff. Don’t worry, the concept of ‘fun’ is like kyptonite to the whingers and hatebots around here (description includes myself). I say go canberra goss!

Thank you Joebananas!

The event is open to every one, if you joined the canberragoss Group you would know 🙂

hee hee! Poolroom!

I bet there are things, but often they’re not publicised… there’s often sneaky dance parties in odd spots. Young People like dance parties.

As for long-range forecasting, some people venture their hands, and you can see the systems coming as they circle Antarctica, but there’s so many other variables that can come into play. It’s dicey.

“Four days later and we’re still waiting for Canberra Goss’s Foreshore reportage”

The CG team is still recovering from the weekend “Some of us where on the correct side of the lake :-P”

If Muddle Bar do another NYE lock-in, that’d be my pick.

canberragoss has organized a xmas party H1NGO.

Given that summernats is the next day, I’d suggest the best thing to do for new years eve is get the hell out of Canberra.

If nothing else Pommy bastard will be impressed with their weather forecasting, haha.

I’d be over there amusedly reading comments about what dolphins get up to on NYE, if only I could access their site. 😐

LOL a million times over. Some great Canberra-based clubbing / youth website – they can’t even get it together to try and put some spin on the situation by hyping up the events that will be held locally. I have no doubt that the various venues around town will be having their own events, and its just poor form to not dig a little deeper to find out what these might be. Not to mention that if anyone wanted to know what was going on in other cities or states they sure wouldnt be logging on to a Canberra-centric site to do it.

These guys are hacks, but great for a laugh!

Nambucco Deliria11:23 am 03 Dec 08

I would suggest that with Summernats being held then they’re bang on the money.
