It was just in late November that Canberra Goss finally launched to an underwhelming response.

Now they’ve already suspended operations before having another go at a launch. This message is currently on their website:

    What happened?

Canberra Goss went out with a bang last year with a huge Christmas party provided by Academy night club. Keep an eye out for the photos soon. We then decided to shut down and re-evaluate the website, and have come up with a new angle for Canberra Goss. We have listened to your feedback and are now putting some of your ideas into action.

We have added some new people to the team, and with a new and improved website on the way, we are confident that Canberra Goss will be your number one source for Canberra night life.

See you soon guys and girls.

    Canberra Goss

    XOXO

If I can make a suggestion. We’d love to run a gossip column here. It’d cost less, be read by more and would save a lot of time making glossy bandwidth hogging flash animation. Less scope for throwing parties I suppose.

It’s just a thought.

No bless their cotton tails!

The “We will surprise you” promise for the new launch is particularly interesting in light of the “ALL SORTS OF PLEASURE IN THE ONE WEBSITE” promised originally.

Maybe they spent all their money on the flash animation and the Christmas party, and forgot to put any cash into planning and developing the business? Just a thought.

Bless their little cotton socks!

how does a public forum get away with deleting comments? edit them to remove the foul language, agreed, but removing altogether?

Check out Whirlpool. Happens all the time there.

Some of my good friends are involved with Canberra Goss and I have it on good authority that the site is down because the bandwidth couldn’t handle the traffic that was hitting up the site. A victim of their own success I suppose.

Speaking as someone who works for a web-hosting provider, upgrading to a larger capacity is usually just a case of sending an email. No serious business goes off-air for weeks to ‘upgrade’ if they wish to retain any credibility.

That dolphin is such a hussy!! I bet she was sleeping with the judges, too.

I voted for the dolphin in a wig.

Hah! Thumper’s a Rutles fan 🙂

I looked at it once (while it was still up) and found it to be a shallow world of pretty lights, hearsay and spelling errors.

and this surprised you?

sounds like half the people posting on that site…

Or the Legislative Assembly…….

Well, I’m completely devastated.

That is the funniest sh*t I have heard in ages!!!

“I have it on good authority that the site is down because the bandwidth couldn’t handle the traffic that was hitting up the site.”

The bandwidth couldn’t handle the what now? I think you’re suggesting the webhosting couldn’t handle the traffic generated. Which I doubt. If your statement is based in truth, then they probably either couldn’t afford to get a decent webhost, or they chose a poor or expensive one.

Perhaps they should shop around for hosting. There’s plenty of dirt cheap USA based services. No web user cares too much about where their forum webhost is located now anyway.

and what would the moderation nightmare be like?

maybe you need to look at a section called Lounge, Orange room, etc – as other forums have done in the past. it would create a different atmosphere to the std RA pages.

I used to love the old website “Shit on Brisbane” – ’twas a great site for finding out what was going on in town.

Well… It is a pretty nice flash animation.

Maybe if CG were a facebook application they may have had more success.

You’re kidding, right ?

Having your bloated, flash-intensive website ravage your bandwidth is quite possibly not due to overwhelming user numbers.
A victim of their own poor design choice, more likely.

Canberra Goss – death becomes you!

RA “Gossip” is sitting in comfy chairs by the fire, sipping brandy and discussing Proust compared to the calibre of posts on Canberra Gossip, Dan. I’d argue you’re dealing with a fairly distinct demographic.

I already thought this wa s Canberra Goss site, among other more valuable things as well.

Their pitfall was opening a canberra based content website when RA already has a readership of +50,000

Maybe, but do you think RA would respond well to the content they post? Also, where would you find the time to moderate all of the “ZOMG tarneesharr is like a totl skank LOLZ” commentary, JB?

I guess it might grow the business though.
