Canberra Goth community stretched to breaking point by Chrome theme for March.

The monthly chance to Goth it up at the “Chrome” night is on at the Civic Grail on 7 March.

But when playing dress-ups the theme is all important.

In an inspired move the organisers have this month gone for “Black and White”. For a group that has so many pasty white faces and black, black clothes this shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

Standing out from the crowd on the other hand… (Goddam conformists!)

I also have to add…Canberra had a Nightclub/Café called Toast which hosted Lithium (Goth Night). I loved going from 2003-2007 until they closed due to ‘noise complaints.’ That’s when I remembered a previous alternative bar that used to be next to King O’Malley’s that closed for the same reasons. A bit rich considering the bar’s that play mainstream and electro music remain open. *sigh*

I love going to OMG (Oh My Goth) at Reload when it’s on. What I find heartening is how so many Goths of different varieties go but also mundane people join in and they’re all having a great time. What I find disheartening is how I can’t find any of these people on the alternative social web sites.

Takes guts (and maybe a little stupidity, but mostly guts) to be a Goth in a Canberra summer.

I think people who knock those for being a little different from the norm without hurting anyone else is pathetic. But you guys keep on knocking, it must be hard having to look at new (or in the case of seekay old) ways to insult others to make you feel better about yourselves.

Should we all just immediately fall into line without stirring things up or raising a few eyebrows?

I don’t think so.

You go goths!

Being a Goth in summertime….yeah it can be difficult but I just where a roller derby t-shirt or tank top and skater shorts, studded belt and the usual Gothic bling. The Goth summer look can be done. 😉👍

I went to the Big Day Out a few years ago when Nine Inch Nails headlined ( BIG in Goth circles). Sure enough, it was somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees. These poor buggers were dressed up to the nines in latex and corsets and studs and leather etc. By late afternoon they had wilted considerably and you could see pockets of them panting in the shade. By the time NIN came on ( it was 9pm ish) all the makeup had run and much of the latex had been removed. I’ll give them their due. After 8 hours in very hot conditions they were still good to go when the time came.

LOL That’s crazy! I’d just wear Gothic Industrial shorts and my NIN t-shirt.

I used to think Goths were the most pitiful creatures on the planet. Then Emos came along…

Hey, being a Goth sure beats being a Bogan. And being an Emo sure beats being a…..Nah, I got nothing. 🤷‍♂️

I was a goth, back in the days when Joy Division, SOM, Souxie, The Cure etc were starting up (back when it had a tinge of originality about it.)

It must be dreadful being a goth in Canberra’s heat, poor things, their make-up must be a bitch to keep straight.

I never had the attention span to be goth, but am too happy to be emo. I do however like the Cure.

Stretched to breaking point? Like the corsets those fat goth girls squeeze into?
