There’s a pretty cool Danger Mouse inspired piece near Rhubarb & Me at Lyneham shops. I’ll try and get a picture of it.

This paper suggests that both graffiti and highly sexualized outdoor advertising
should be understood as forms of street harassment. Research exists charting the
manner in which graffiti creates fear in public space and fear of crime is something
experienced by women more frequently than men. There has been no similar
research done on outdoor advertising. Using ideas from feminist geography and
criminology this paper argues that the socially exclusive consequences of the fears of
crime brought about by graffiti and outdoor advertising can be understood as being
similar to the consequences of street harassment.

Some of these are amazing, we need a gallery for some of these artists, these types of galleries are popping up all over the world. It keeps the art safe and people do buy it.

Think of how much bubble-wrap some of those walls would take.

I agree. Most graffiti is crap anyway.

most of this is only one step up from tagging. dull dull dull. how about some funky cartoon pictures or messages (in pictorial form – banksy style) rather than just writing your name in pretty colours!

could cost anywhere between $50 to $150 or more each time, depending on the brand of paint used (aus or european) and the amount of cans/detail needed

There’s a Banksy type painting on the underpass near the servo in Kaleen. Interesting.

Ooh, have to check that out. There’s also some cool stuff in the storm water drain at the northern intersection of Baldwin and Maribyrnong. An awesome yellow submarine with some marine life. Really cool. I much prefer the purdie pictures to the uber-stylised words in the video.

local artist luke cornish has also done some commissioned stencil art around the cement planters on the U-shaped road across from the theatre on london circuit.

only govt sanctioned graff is ok i guess.

How much does it cost in paint for one of the larger ones?

I cycle past that Kaleen spot every day and I’m amazed how frequently they are painted over. Must cost a bomb as they routinely put an entire base layer over the previous stuff.

Come down to Belconnen Bus Interchange next week – artists are taking over!

Anyway I like to do online photo contests and graffiti is often a subject. Where do I find some of these better works of art?

as awkwardly uncomfortable as watching my mum learn to text message.

i used to work with the unemployed removing grafitti, was a shame to paint over some of it, many hours of work and talent! But if it gets reported by a little old lady, its gotta go. I also like the blue one best. i will keep an eye out for more!

they often do

There are some new pieces (like finished yeterday) near Callum Offices/Koomari in Phillip that are awesome. Get them before some *ahem* tags them.

its legible to the trained eye, and like any art you can generally pick out the artists by the styles they use.
few nice ones in there

Some great pieces there. And a few pretty lame ones thrown in for balance. Kinda with I had the skill to take what’s in my mind and display it on a wall like that.

As always though, I kinda wish the art form enabled the reading of the text….
