Canberra has a free slot and no curfew

As quoted in a story over at AirCargo Asia-Pacific, Canberra airport is “ideally placed to take advantage of a business that will deliver new jobs and new business opportunities” according to Canberra airport’s aviation manager, Matthew Brown. This in relation to using Canberra as a back up destination should freight flights not be able to land in Sydney as was the case a couple of time recently.

Wishful thinking? Or is Canberra ready, even without a rail system nearby the airport and over crowded roads, for the extra truck and aircraft traffic that turning Canberra into an east coast freight destination would bring? And how fair along would the benefits flow if we are?

Good point, caf. They can shuffle their trucks to either the Canberra railway, or possibly Queanbeyan via Oaks Estate (not sure if Qbn has frieght loading facilities though). The effect on the roads surrounding the airport, and suburbs they go through, well, anyone who’s experienced the airport daily traffic jams will know what to expect.
Freight planes tend to be rather noisy, too (unless they’ve changed recently).

What do you mean “even without a rail system nearby”, it’s about 7km down piallago road to the canberra-sydney railway.

How will the residents of NSW’s newest suburb cope with the added aircraft noise ?

Oh no !

I just hope it doesn’t have any affect on my Zeppelin route, luxury aeronautical rides between Sydney and Canberra. Unfortunately I have only been able to locate zeppelins with burn damage so far, still awaiting a fully operational one.

Isn’t the freight handling supposed to move the goods into the nearest Brand Depot?

It depends on how additional freight handling would be set up. I would be surprised if we built the facilities needed purely as ‘surge’ capacity.
