The ABC informs us that Canberra has a new Iman Imam, Yasar Atay, as they try to distance themselves from the Government of Saudi Arabia.

Society president Sabre Poskovic says the appointment of a new, full-time imam, Yasar Atay, will help the city’s Muslim community be more independent.

“We don’t need any help from any embassy, especially from Saudi Arabia in employing imams, some imams and we don’t need that

Good for them.

D’oh! This thing eat tags! That should be

[laughs] Hasdrubahl wins!

Hasdrubahl wins!

And even I know you should be spelling your name “Snarkie”.

I’m going to hate myself for doing this, but…

“plebeians” is what you’re thinking of here.

Not a neanderthal for nothing.
It’s “despondent”, and “plebeans”….

Interesting… A post on the appointment of a religious leader has turned into a grammatical debate.
But I may add to the growing litany of disgust at the widespread abuse of the Queens English.
I forget who said it but someone once remarked, to an American I believe: “Has any one phoned the Queen and told her what you have done to her language.”

My gripes, not so much grammatical:
Pacific instead of specific, youse instead of you, I seen instead of I saw, pronouncing words that end in ‘ing’ as ‘ink’. The list does go on; but I grow despondant at the thought of all the semi-literate plebeains out there making a mockery of our most mellifluous language.

One other thing that I bet you hate as well AD: when people say “quite” when they mean “quiet”… omfg retards!

i’m with you AD – those kinds of grammatical mistakes make me loose my temper

the anger surrounds me like drunken custard.

El: AD is male, but misses Diane…

The new imam was interviewed on 666 this morning.
37 years old, reasonable grasp of English, and came across as well-intentioned and with a plan for healing a split inlocal Islamic community. Generally a pretty good first interview.

Seepi: heard “scenario-ise” used on Radio National this morning when talking about Iraq solutions (or lack thereof…)

5 million of Saudi money unaccounted for?
That’s frightening if you believe that its the Wadists who are behind Al Q.

‘hence why’ is my little grammar gripe.

Isn’t the Yarralumla mosque supposed to be one of the oldest in Australia? If so, pretty cool that it’s in Canberra. Makes a nice change from Sydney and Melbourne having all the historically significant religious buildings.

The cat did it?

Apparently uncovered meat attracts cats … or so I’ve heard.

There their, Diane…don’t be angry…

😉

the one that annoys me is people using loose instead of lose… grrr anger5000

its terrible, innit, al? yore sew rite; there impacting everywhere!! ; )

Grammar pedant to the fore, but I’m getting amazed at the number of people incorrectly using ‘your’ these days. It’s ‘you’re’, as in short for ‘you are’.
>>off soapbox

careful cat your beginning to make sense. That tends to confuse religious types.

Re the issue about a Saudi diplomat giving the previous Imam $35k for mosque repairs- which the Imam refused to release: one might ask where the money is now, and when will it be made available to the Canberra Islamic Society …

An “iman” is the bloke from Mac who fixes computers. He also enjoys ipods, imovies and itunes.
An Imam is a Muslim community leader.
